Reliability Evaluation of Power Systems has evolved from our deep interest in education and our long-standing involvement in quantitative reliability evaluation and application of probability techniques to power system problems. It could not have been written, however, without the active involvement of many students in our respective research programs. There have been too many to mention individu­ ally hut most are recorded within the references at the ends of chapters.

This is a great book, but make sure that if you purchase it that you also get Reliability Evaluation of Engineering Systems: Concepts and Techniques by the same authors. This is really the second of a 2 part series, and refers back to Engineering Systems for all of the math, providing specific examples for the power system in this book.

I'm working on a project investigating reliability of various networks within the electric power system, and the two books by Billinton and Allan are the best I've seen on the subject.

This is a good book.

Today I spend an hour hiding in conference room get a piece of coding done, did not reply emails until 3:00 pm, got out of the office at 5:15 pm, and I felt this is the most productive day for the last 5 months. Robin moves from boy to man wonder as he takes the guise of grown-up crime fighter Nightwing in this origin story. Nightwing's fans will enjoy the exploration of what made him who he is. The story starts with the break between Batman and his sidekick, a result of Robin's conflicting responsibilities: to college; his supergroup, the Teen Titans; and Batman himself. The rest of the story follows Dick Grayson's journey to becoming Nightwing. The narration laid on top of the story, coming from an older and wiser Grayson, adds emotional resonance to the events. The tensions between Batman and his young protégé are nicely portrayed, as are Grayson's feelings of regret and bitterness following the break. Finally, Nightwing confronts the new Robin, Jason Todd, revealing a good deal about the character and his changing self-image. The tale's episodic quality occasionally drains its energy as Grayson's encounters with a circus lion, the Joker and Batgirl aren't always intimately involved with his changing character, but the story pulls through, arriving at satisfying confrontations between Nightwing and the most important characters in his life. Grade 6 Up–This graphic novel recounts the coming-of-age of Batmans sidekick Dick Grayson as he makes the transition from child to adult and from Robin to Nightwing. When he is fired for neglecting his duties, he first seeks guidance from Superman and then solace in his former life as a circus performer. Meanwhile, Batman is training a new Robin to take his place. Eventually an exercise gone wrong brings the two Robins together, and they must put aside their rivalry in order to rescue Alfred after he is mistakenly identified as Two Face. This story is mainly about the struggle of a young man trying to establish his own identity, and his attempt to define himself as his own superhero will appeal to teens. It is clearly set in todays world; Nightwing wears a hoodie, Batman must rescue a child kidnapped in a custody dispute, and a villain is caught because he decided to purchase an economy car rather than a gas-guzzling SUV. Great story, Great characters, Great adventure! GREAT!

This is a must have for Robin/Nightwing fans. The story fills in some great details on Dick's transition from "Boy Wonder" to "Man Wonder".

Every character has their own voice and familiar characterization. Dick is brave and resourceful, Alfred is caring, Batman is callous and Jason Todd is a brat. The linear nature of the story is wonderful, not wasting time in re-caps and histories, but going forward with a great adventure.

The only drawback is the blocky, cartoony nature of the artwork, but the story is so well-written you hardly notice it.

Nightwing: A Refreshingly Different Read

I am, and will probably always be, a Batman fan first and foremost. However, Nightwing brings an attitude, style, and level of action to the comics that is very entertaining. He is very different from his mentor. Sometimes this is good, sometimes bad.

For instance, I see Nightwing as more reckless than Batman. Batman always has a plan within a plan within a plan. Nightwing is also a clever and careful person, but he is not afraid to get his hands dirty in an all-out brawl.

Second, Nightwing has a sense of humor. Not gonna find that with Batman.

Third, however, Nightwing just seems more consistent. Nightwing is a lot more like Dick Grayson, where Batman is nothing like Bruce Wayne. This creates a continuity of character in the Nightwing series.

Nightwing has left behind the Robin role, left the Titans, and now focused his eyes upon Bludhaven. Eventually, he will become the protector of Bludhaven as Batman is the protector of Gotham. He even has an antagonist who is his perfect spoil- the Blockbuster.

Nightwing: Year One introduces us to a character who will take a path different from the one of his mentor.

The Prototype Year One Story

There comes a time when all Robins must leave the nest and fly solo, in this case taking flight under the name Nightwing. Yes it's a painful cliché but so apropos. Parting can be such sweet sorrow, but Dick Grayson needed to become his own man and the time was now. The evolution of Robin to NW was a long time coming, Nightwing being one of the best characters DC has created in years. Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty bucked the trend of disappointing Year One stories as the two take us on a whirlwind "This is your life" journey from past to present connecting his pre-Batman days with his current status quo. He first travels to Metropolis for a heart to heart with his former World's Finest buddy Superman, then on to the circus of his childhood, which also includes a visit from the mysterious Deadman. Of course no Dick Grayson story would be complete without Barbara Gordon, the love of his life and occasional crime fighting partner. Their relationship is a joy to read and one of the more poignant portrayals in comics. We are finally brought full circle and a bit of future shock with his encounter with Jason Todd. Sorry Dick, no one is irreplaceable. The dialogue is sharp and characterizations spot on. Naturally Batman has to play the heavy as a means of triggering the story to begin with. So despite some friction, this cast is one big but not necessarily happy Batfamily, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

The Theory of Constraints (TOC) will change the way you think

Eliyahu Goldratt's "The Goal" is an entertaining novel and at the same time a thought provoking business book. The story is about a plant manager, Alex Rogo, whose plant and marriage are going downhill. He finds himself in the unenviable position of having ninety days in which to save his plant. A fortuitous meeting with an old acquaintance, Jonah, introduces him to the Theory of Constrains (TOC). He uses this new way of thinking to ...
TOC postulates that for an organization to have an ongoing process of improvement, it needs to answer three fundamental questions:
1. What to change?
2. To what to change?
3. How to cause the change?
The goal is to make (more) money, which is done by the following:
1. Increase Throughput
2. Reduce Inventory
3. Reduce Operating Expense
Goldratt defines throughput (T) as the rate at which the system generates money through sales. He also defines inventory (I) as everything the system invests in that it intends to sell. Operating expense (OE) is defined as all the money the system spends in order to convert inventory into throughput.
The author does an excellent job explaining his concepts, especially how to work with constraints and bottlenecks (processes in a chain of processes, such that their limited capacity reduces the capacity of the whole chain). He makes the reader empathize with Alex Rogo and his family and team. Don't be surprised if you find yourself cheering for Alex to succeed.
The importance and benefits of focusing on the activities that are constraints are clearly described with several examples in "The Goal". One example from the book is the one in which Alex takes his son and a group of Boy Scouts out on a hiking expedition. Here Alex faces a constraint in the form of the slowest boy, Herbie. Alex gets to apply two of the principles Jonah talked to him about - "dependent events" (events in which the output of one event influences the input to another event) and "statistical fluctuations" (common cause variations in output quantity or quality). He realizes that in a chain of dependent processes, statistical fluctuations can occur at any step. These result in time lags between the processes that accumulate and grow in size further down the chain. This leads to the performance of the system becoming worse than the average capacity of the constraint.
It is interesting to note that TOC practitioners often refer to TOC concepts in terms of references from this book. For example, a constraint is often called a Herbie.
The Goldratt Institute (goldratt dot com) has illustrated TOC Analysis in the form of five steps used as a foundation upon which solutions are built:
1. Identify the constraint
2. Decide how to exploit the constraint
3. Subordinate and synchronize everything else to the above decisions
4. Elevate the performance of the constraint
5. If, in any of the above steps the constraint has shifted, go back to Step 1
Although this book is excellent in the context of Operations, the "Goal" to "make (more) money by..." is limited in its focus. It is concerned with the cost centers internal to a business. Business performance in today's increasingly competitive market depends on a variety of factors that exist outside the business. These include competitors, external opportunities, customers and the non-customers. Executives need to focus on these in order to see the bigger picture.
This book is necessary reading at the best MBA programs. In addition to being a review, this write-up was intended to serve as a summary of the core concepts of this book and TOC. If you are reading this as part of your coursework, please feel free to share the link with your fellow students.

It' so much more than a business book on meeting the goal

I didn't know what to expect when I began reading this novel about a manufacturing plant. As provider of a professional (legal and risk management) services, I initially thought this wouldn't have much application for me. But it certainly does. First, the story itself, told as a novel, is an enjoyable read. This must be the first business book that I didn't want to put down until I had finished reading it from cover to cover!

Key points in the book include the principle of finding and then focusing on the one true goal and not getting caught up on a lot of side issues that others (even others in management) might think are the goal. This requires learning how to stop and really look at the problem. It then requires new ways to look for and try potential solutions. This includes ask penetrating questions of yourself and others who may provide key information and insights. And it requires really listening to what the affected people have to say about different aspects of achieving the goal.

An important point that is made is that every individual within the organization has part of the knowledge needed to reach the goal, and that we need to create a genuine environment where we not only encourage their participation but we also teach everyone how to ask the right questions so they can see for themselves what needs to be done to achieve the goal.

Incidentally, the partnership of communication that ultimately develops between the lead character and his employees and superiors overflows into his relationship with his spouse and naturally changes their relationship as well. There is much to be learned from this book, and I can see why it has been such a huge success for so many years.

Concepts from The Goal

The author of this business novel thinks he's the Messiah. The gist of the 384-page book could have been expressed in a page, and some of it is obvious. But it may be useful anyway, and it's an entertaining read.

His schtick is that one can achieve great gains by identifying the bottlenecks ('constraints') that are blocking improved performance toward your goal, and then doing anything necessary to unblock those constraints - even if this means inefficiently using other non-bottleneck resources.

He says that one should think of the cost of each resource as including its effect on the whole system. So if a machine costs $1K/month to operate, but its rate of production is preventing the business from accepting or fulfilling extra orders that would represent $10K/month in profits, then the true cost of the machine is $11K.

It follows that anything one can do to remove that bottleneck would be worthwhile, provided it adds less than the amount saved to the cost and doesn't introduce a new bottleneck. It's fine if you have to overpay for other resources or use them inefficiently as long as you accomplish this.

It then becomes a matter of analyzing and brainstorming all the ways that bottleneck can be reduced. For instance:

- Can extra capacity be added, even if it is less efficient or uses antiquated equipment or is outsourced to a vendor?

- Can you prioritize the use of the bottlenecked resource so that high-profit and time-sensitive work comes first?

- Can you divert work that doesn't need to go through the bottleneck, even if it would then go through another more cumbersome process?

- Can you prevent work from reaching the bottleneck if Quality Control will eventually reject it?

- Can you increase the rate of output of the bottleneck resource by doubling up batches?

This logic applies regardless of the nature of the bottleneck - whether it relates to a machine (production capacity), marketing effort (how much business is coming in), or any other element of one's environment.

To help identify the bottlenecks and judge tradeoffs, one should identify one's goal as a measure (in a business context this is generally profits or ROI), then identify the factors that influence that measurement and create an equation. For instance,

Profits = Sales - Cost of Inputs - Cost of Transforming Inputs

or,

Return On Investment = (Sales - Cost of Inputs - Cost of Transforming Inputs) / Money Trapped In Unfinished Goods And Inventory

Essentially, his thesis is that by focusing on these bottlenecks, and analyzing and brainstorming their solutions, one takes advantage of the 80/20 rule by prioritizing those few factors that most greatly impact one's performance.

The most rewarding part of the book are the examples in the Testimonials section at the end. The testimonials describe creative solutions to tough bottleneck situations. The book doesn't help the reader come up with this type of creative solution - it only mentions where to look for the problem. Here are the memorable examples he cites:

1. A large office supply company (similar to Staples) was losing business to companies that were charging very low prices. Investigating this marketing bottleneck, they determined that from the customers' perspective, the larger problem was the overall cost of stocking and procuring and purchasing and tracking the office supplies.

Rather than competing on price, its owner fixed the Sales bottleneck with an innovative concept, where they arranged to place fully stocked cabinets filled with office supplies throughout their client companies, just like a hotel minibar. They'd visit each week, restock any items that were used, and charge the company for the items that were removed, thereby saving the company the aggravation and cost of even having to purchase or account for office supplies. They also supplied each customer with detailed information regarding what was used, when. In exchange for this unique convenience, they charged higher prices and achieved large profit margins.

3. A manufacturing company's output was limited by a saw that cut pipes. They dug up an old, inefficient saw, put it to work to remove that bottleneck, and increased output and profits significantly.

4. In the book itself, the protagonist's factory increased its Return On Investment (profit/money tied up) by shortening the time it took for a product to be manufactured (as doing that reduced the money tied up, hence increased ROI). This was accomplished by removing delays that were keeping costly unfinished products sitting around the plant. For instance, by reducing the 'batch size', a product would wait less time for its batch to be complete, allowing it to move to the next step of production sooner.

The Origins of Brown Bear

On a train ride in 1966, the title phrase Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? popped into Bill Martin Jr.'s head. Later, he spotted an illustration of a red lobster in a magazine and contacted the creator, Eric Carle, to ask if he would illustrate his poem. So began Eric Carle's career as a children's book illustrator--along with a life-long collaborative friendship with Bill Martin Jr. Since then, Brown Bear and the three companion titles, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, and Baby Bear, have gone on to sell millions of copies worldwide.

A Question for Eric Carle

Before the Bear books, you worked in advertising but had not yet created a children's book. What went through your mind when you first heard from author Bill Martin Jr. about the Brown Bear manuscript? What made you want to illustrate it?

Eric Carle: At that point I was doing work-for-hire and I was very pleased to have the chance to do something different. I went through the manuscript and could see in my mind images of bright colorful animals, big and bold and simple like in posters. I was actually able to finish the art for this book and deliver it in one weekend. The whole process felt right and I was very excited by the opportunity to work on the book with Bill, which really changed my life and set me on the true course in my career.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- In this new edition of the popular classic (Holt, 1983), the same clean design and crisp text remain. Illustrations, however, have been slightly altered. Stronger colors and more texture help delineate animal bodies more sharply. Positions and shapes are slightly changed, resulting in a less static look. Red Bird is shown in flying position with a sleeker body, sharper beak, and more carefully defined tail and wing features. Yellow Duck has webbed feet and an open bill; Blue Horse has black hooves and teeth showing; Green Frog a spotted back and pink tongue; the former Mother with pale pink skin has become Teacher with beige skin tones and darker hair. The overall effect is livelier and more interesting, although changes are minimal enough that the old edition is still serviceable. Who watches the watchers?

This has been the book of choice for my 7mo daughter's bed time. We heard that it's better to read the same book over and over to young kids so that they become familiar with matching up the words and the sounds.

I know it seems like a simple book, but there's a lot more depth to be uncovered on repeated readings, as I've had the luxury of experiencing every night (and sometimes multiple times during the day) for the last three months.

It opens with a simple question: "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?" And if you were to judge this book by its cover, you might assume the bear to be the protagonist of the story. But as it unfolds, we are...

*** SPOILERS BELOW ***

... taken through a tour of the real and familiar (brown bears, red birds) along with the fantastically surreal (blue horses, purple cats). And despite the cartoonish illustrations and unassuming prose, we come to find that this is a world of paranoia and domestic surveillance. A world where neighbor spies upon neighbor.

"Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?"
"I see a red bird looking at me."

"Red bird, red bird, what do you see?"
"I see a yellow duck looking at me."

The book begins with a lie. When the red bird is asked, "What do you see?", the correct answer is "a brown bear." But she does not admit that she is spying on the brown bear, only complains that the yellow duck is spying on her.

As the pages turn, we learn that all characters are being watched: from the strong (the bear), to the useful (blue horse), to the outcast (black sheep). We learn that all characters know that they are being watched (presumably, this keeps them in line). And we learn that all the characters (except for the bear) are watching one of their peers. (As an aside, it's interesting that this society's only celebrity -- the titular bear -- is the only character to be watched by his peers without the power to watch back. I can only assume that this is Martin's commentary on the impotence of fame.)

As the camera pulls back, we learn that each animal is merely a minor player with myopic vision. In its dramatic, Usual Suspects-esque conclusion, we learn that we are not in a forest or frolicking in the outdoors, but we are in a classroom. An authority figure is introduced:

"Goldfish, goldfish, what do you see?"
"I see a teacher looking at me."

With the introduction of this (white) teacher we realize that these characters who seemed to be free, roaming in their natural habitat, are actually prisoners trapped in the hardbound confines of this book. And yet, even the teacher's vision is limited, for she too is trapped.

"Teacher, teacher, what do you see?"
"I see children looking at me."

The children are vastly more powerful and knowledgeable than any other character. For it is only they -- the readers themselves -- who see all of the characters.

"Children, children, what do you see?"
"We see a brown bear,
a red bird,
a yellow duck,
a blue horse,
a green frog,
a purple cat,
a white dog,
a black sheep,
a goldfish,
and a teacher LOOKING AT US.
That's what we see."

It is those three words -- "looking at us" -- that are most chilling.

If the animals were looking at the children this whole time, why don't they say so? When the bear was asked what he saw, he mentioned only the bird. When the bird was asked what she saw, she mentioned only the duck. Every single character in the book is looking at the children and yet every single one refuses to admit that they see them. It's only the authority figure who has the courage to acknowledge their presence.

How tight must the children's tyrannical grip be to force an entire population into unified submissive silence? The children have complete control, for they not only know everything about the world the characters inhabit, but they also have the power to destroy that world (as many of this book's youngest readers undoubtedly have).

It is the proverbial bear who is not to be poked. But through the bear's opening omission we learn that even he is too scared of the children to publicly acknowledge their existence. The true revelation to this book's opening question is not that the brown bear sees the red bird. It's that he also sees the omniscient, omnipotent children, but is too terrified to say so.

But the children know that he knows.

I don't believe the rumors that this book originated as recruitment propaganda by US intelligence agencies to entice young children to join an elite, "all-seeing" organization that has complete control over the rest of the population, including its powerless authority figures.

Instead, I like to believe that Martin wrote this book (just one year after regular US troops were deployed to Vietnam) as a subversive allegory daring to ask the question "Who watches the watchers?" A question more important today than ever before.

A+++. Would read again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And oh dear God make it stop.

Great book for young infants!

Its hard to find books newborns and infants... They wont really pay attention to many books, and I have PLENTY that I have tried. I started reading this to my son starting at 1-2 months and he has loved it! He is now 7 months and loves it too! Its short, sweet, and has a cute rhythm to it (does not rhyme). The pictures are vibrant enough to catch his attention and not overly cluttered. There is just one animal on each page and babies love that... Clear outline of an animal. I have other books with seemingly pretty illustrations that are bright and colorful but my son could care less about those.

I highly recommend this book and even buy it as gifts for new moms! It is a classic for every nursery.

Also, I want to note that I dont get sick of reading it over and over...

Great for infants and for toddlers!

This is one of my daughter's favorites. When she was tiny, she loved the simply, bright pictures on each page. Now that she is older, she LOVES sliding the squares over on each page to reveal the next animal. We have been reading this almost daily for over a year and it has held up beautifully. I like that the sliding squares are sturdy and are not flaps that she an easily tear.

The new Bible about Intraoperative monitoring

I have been involved in intraoperative monitoring for 20+ years and I have almost any textbook in the field including Dr. Nuwer's original work from 1986 and its second edition from 2000. This new volume is by far the best book published ever about IOM. It has almost 1000 pages devoted to the field. Each chapter is written by a well known authority. The first section covers basic science aspects to understand the generation of electro-physiologic signals and the anatomic structures involved. Then it follows a detailed description of ALL the techniques currently available. The last part covers the different types of surgical procedures where IOM may be needed. No matter which level in the field you are you will find new and useful information in this amazing book. Thanks to Dr. Nuwer, to the IFCN and to the series editors Dr. Daube and Dr. Mauguire for putting this wonderful amount of information altogether.

Excellent framework for EA that is further improved through this book.

The Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture (PEAF) developed by Kevin Lee Smith is a proven and increasingly used very effectively by enterprises across the world. This is the 3rd edition that has many small improvements and also placed within the larger and wider framework for enterprise transformations called POET (Pragmatic Ontology for Enterprise Transformation).
PEAF has many strengths and unique points of differentiation from other Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks. These include the explicit inclusion of organisation culture and its importance for EA, extensive coverage of the importance and impact of change on people from EA efforts, and above it is approachable, relatively simple to understand and extensively proven and increasingly used in organisations across the world. The book captures this and also educates through its use of example, clear descriptions, and explicit coverage of the usual objections and questions asked about EA.
The book would be improved by the use of diagram captions, larger easier to read diagrams and an index to encourage spontaneous usage.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Enterprise Architecture and its use and value within any organisation. It is, as usual for Kevin Smith’s material, thought provoking, even if the extensive use of pastel colours is initially unusual for a book of this type!
