The Complete Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi

Here, in one volume: Marjane Satrapi's best-selling, internationally acclaimed memoir-in-comic-strips.

Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdom--Persepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today.

Review
"A memoir of growing up as a girl in revolutionary Iran, Persepolis provides a unique glimpse into a nearly unknown and unreachable way of life... That Satrapi chose to tell her remarkable story as a gorgeous comic book makes it totally unique and indispensable."

By NextDoorGirl
A great coming of age story of a girl building her own identity and finding out what it means to be true to yourself in times of political turmoil and religious extremism in Iran.

I particularly enjoyed how Satrapi depicted the emotional chaos brought by her time spent in Vienna and the challenges of feeling foreign everywhere, both at "home" and abroad.

My favorite part was when she muses about all the rules Iranians had to follow for the government to leave them alone and how worrying about being arrested for breaking the rules kept them from worrying about the things that truly matter: civil rights, human rights, freedom of speech. It is applicable to so many other countries, not just those with repressive regimes but those facing extreme violence, those were the media fills up the space with inane content.

It is a great book, easy to follow, even for someone with very little background on Iran and its rich history, a story that begs us to ask more questions and educate ourselves.

Really fantastic. Couldn't put it down
By AlisonK, NJ
Really fantastic. Couldn't put it down. If you like personal stories or have any interest in Iran and/or even the complexity of what's going on now in the Middle East, I highly recommend. It won't explain all the history, etc. to you per se, but it offers an inside account of being a child and young adult from a smart, endearing, politically aware family (and more, a family who's history is intertwined with Iranian politics) who's experiencing the effects of the Revolution throughout her childhood and young adult years. Also offers a super interesting account of young adult counterculture Vienna in the 80s. Graphics and writing are both great. Satrapi is a gifted story teller. Her parents (who are a big part of the story) must be very proud. Was sad when it ended....

AP World History Review: A Good Read
By Wanda
Persepolis was the most interesting biography I have read in the last few years. I loved how she made it into a comic book. It seemed to lighten or darken the mood and got you more into the book than one normally would with an autobiography. Satrapi was good about explaining her thoughts and what was going on. It helped me understand what was going on, better. Overall, I had never truly understood what exactly happened in the Iranian Revolution and the Iraq-Iran war. Because it was in her POV, I had a good outlet and experience for what actually happened. It was not the same type of information one would get from a researched history. Satrapi could write about what her neighbors said, as well as her parents. Because it is about herself, it was also more clear why people did what they did and what it was like to live in a situation like hers.
Persepolis was a good tool for a better understanding of earlier modern Iran and its conflicts. Not only does she tell you about wha twas going on in Iran, she also tells of a few parts of Europe. The racism and separation people participated in when they found out of her Iranian upbringing. People saw Iranians as violent and cruel as well as oppressive of women. She tried to get them to understand that not all were like that, and still, the stereotypes were not completely true in the first place. Satrapi does a great job at portraiting real life struggles and how she got through them. It gives students a new perspective on how other people live and what a revolution and war can feel like at the front. Students here do not really experience this type of thing. Understanding the circumstances and what people lived through can help a student understand why different choices were or were not made. Therefore understanding a people and time period more.

greet transcriptions, jumpeen offf poynts
By scarecrow
you have no vision of jazz piano until you see the Solo, away from the group who's keepeen the beat, and laying down the bass for you, this just frees you up a bit, Monk created his greea-test solos in the group, all those spiky chords, Ab-D-G, or cd-Ab-Db,also the suspension(S) of the beat attest to his interest in expanding what we call music, But if you've never heard Solo you really haven't heard anything, Also Cecil Taylor, needs a review of Solo, what he creates, the bonfires he sets with the Solo Piano,

But Monk equally did Solo Work,n'had a way of practicing, taking only one song and playing it for hours, to see what was in it, He did this with all the tunes here, and I guess you can say that what is here was the best reading of possibly I don't know 10 different reading of each tune. Still you get the interesting dimensions of what Monk could do with harmonies, and chords,-flatted and sharped 5ths and Ninths, is where the tension comes from, in a Blues progression you need to sharp the Ninth, as in C-Major, Tonic Chord is now E-Bb-D#, and F-Chord, is F-A-B-Eb, greet stuff. When he Went Solo he kept the traditional stride Left Hand, something if you look for it in group Work it remains but, He began to use his Left Hand in the Group as rhythm as percussion products, with cluster chords, even in "Bright Mississippi", he uses his whole arm for accents.

My favorite here is "everything happens to me", sums up the state of the globe now for us down here, you can play this over and over again and still find different voices between the hands, I found myself developing from what is written out, and it is fairly faithful to the recording, well one of them in that Monk always took multiple taks on all the Tunes herein. "Don't Blame me" as well, has great dissonances, that you can develop even more, and the classic now, "just a gigolo', who would think this Vegas tune could be made into a classic, but again the dissonances are incredible, it lives forever because of the unresolved tensions you have here;and there are more hesitations in Live than in the transcription; I found that you can really make your own half hour solos from what is written here, and apply the chords in and around the other tunes, like a paradigm that lives throughout all the tunes herein. There are other more strenuus as "devil and Deep Blue Sea", difficult to bring off, and Gershwin's "Liza" you really need to work with vision. . . This is the best book I've found thus far on Monk or any jazz transcriptions, the other are too skeletle, too obvious to do you any good, if you really want to learnnn jazz. But please listen to Monk play without the music first, and bring that experience internally inside yourself, then you can go and play from this Book. . . it will change the way you think about music. . .

Close to the real deal
By Bluesman
With all transcriptions it is difficult to know from which recording they are transcribed. The book is at least a great starting point for those of us that are striving to understand his style. These are solo piano transcriptions so they do not translate well into trio work. Would recommend this book to any serious student of Monk.

Terra Nova. Global Revolution and the Healing of Love, by Dieter Duhm

In Terra Nova: Global Revolution and the Healing of Love, the author Dr. Dieter Duhm presents the vision for a new global culture – a world without war, a society without violence, love free of lies, life free of fear. - This book encapsulates the insights of more than 40 years of research in living in one of the worlds more radical communitiy "Tamera" and combines these results with the findings of revolutionary pioneers such as Teilhard de Chardin, Wilhelm Reich, David Bohm, Peace Pilgrim and Jacques Lusseyran, of modern science and spiritual wisdom. Arriving in times of severe global crises, this book suggests a possible positive scenario for the time after the collapse of global capitalism and a plan for how to get there. Terra Nova is the vision of a human civilization that will be compatible with nature, the great family of life and the universe. A new Earth based on trust.

This is one of the most powerful books I've read on impending Great Transition. It should be required reading for anyone interested in exploring what the post-capitalist world could look like.

I've actually written a book review on Terra Nova, contrasting it with another popular account of what will happen to the planet in the next 20 years, The Collapse of Western Civilization. You can read the review here:

Global Spiritual Revolution
By David Lorimer
The central theme of this visionary yet practical book is how we generate a new form of humaneness based on trust and mutual support. In the late 1960s, the author was a Marxist activist, but he realised that Marxism did not address the inner aspect of life from which outer patterns of behaviour emerge. This led him to found a community in 1978, which moved to become Tamera in Portugal in 1995. In the introduction, he states that the human being is the cause of his own failure because he disregarded some essential aspects of his own inner world - the driving powers of the soul, libidinous longings, sexuality and animality, spiritual powers, hopes and fears. His thesis is that a transformation of the inner world will lead to a corresponding outer transformation - a critical aspect of our story but then our outer structures also shape our inner world and draw out certain features of human nature. As this year has shown only too clearly, we live within a matrix of fear and violence portrayed by the media, even if most of us are in fact living peacefully in our own communities. I'm sure he is right in regarding the community or group as a microcosm of human existence, containing as it does light and dark elements. It is important to remind ourselves, as Aldous Huxley pointed out in 1942, that a humane goal cannot be reached through inhumane means. Whatever the short-term imperatives, violence will create further violence in a spiral of destruction.

We need to reflect deeply on what it means to choose life and trust and to realise our inherent interconnectedness as expressions of one life and one consciousness. We are deeply embedded in a morphic field of fear (Duhm uses the word morphogenetic, but Rupert Sheldrake himself would use ‘morphic’ in this wider context) - primarily fear of loss and separation at a deep unconscious level, where so many horrific images of war and suffering are stored. An important part of his thesis and the work of Tamera is that our patriarchal society and institutions have for centuries suppressed women's sexuality (Riane Eisler has written extensively about this) in systems of domination and possession. This requires a freeing up of love and sexuality based on real contact and trust rather than exploitation. Duhm makes a deep connection between lying, betrayal, fear and violence in love with their corresponding expression in war - all this destroys trust and therefore openness to love and compassion. This applies especially to bringing up children, who need this atmosphere of love in order to flourish.

The second section on concrete utopia explains how we can create a new morphic field from the inside out. He gives some remarkable examples from Satprem to illustrate that our thoughts and feelings shape how the outer world reacts to us. He calls this acting through the ‘inner operator’ or higher self corresponding to the sacred matrix or cosmic pattern of life also represented in our culture by the power of Christ. A further manifestation is Ananda or joy, which enables a harmonious relationship in Tamera between humans and nature, even those we normally regard as pests. The overall vision is of a new humanity on a healed Earth and it is critical to articulate and hold this vision – as embodied in communities like Tamera – as a field to attract its own realisation. It can only start small and grow, like all seeds in nature.

The third part spells out in more detail how the Earth and humanity can be healed, as has happened for instance at Tamera due to their water retention scheme that has regenerated the previously arid area. Life is inherently healing and the entelechy of each organism contains its own blueprint for development. Duhm describes the processes for the development of trust and solidarity used at Tamera for the healing of love and the freeing of sexual expression as well as the recognition that our human challenges are universal. He summarises these in a series of guidelines and more general ethical principles all based on the primacy of love – especially the deep soul connection - for human flourishing. Nonviolent human culture has to be based on truth, mutual support, responsible participation in the community, transparency, reliability and care for the animal world. At an emotional level this means becoming free of reactivity so that the spiritual powers of the universe can act through you.

The fourth part explains the global healing biotopes or cells, of which the Tamera community is one. These are anchored in the universal powers of life and creation, taking ‘a determined, non-negotiable stand for life.’ Members shift from an individual to a community identity and become more radically themselves as they drop the need to be normal in society’s terms. This goes way beyond the collectivism associated with Marxism and its emphasis on social conditioning. As people reveal themselves and are really seen, they are loved for who they are. They also magnetise around a higher spiritual ideal. In our time we not only need a strong vision of hope and love but a practical demonstration of its reality. This visionary book and the Tamera community are beacons of our new possibilities and give us a compass direction to the creation of a more trusting world to which our young people can aspire.

A BEAUTIFUL AND REALIZABLE PATHWAY TO PEACE
By Durel K.
In the Terra Nova book, Dieter Duhm offers a comprehensive vision of a concrete utopia grounded in nearly forty years of research in community. What he details is literally a New Earth evolving not from our shared human history of war and collective trauma but rather from the newly emerging information field of peace. This is a world based on trust and mutual support, ending the long assault against life and love characterizing the patriarchal period of the last five thousand years. Essential to this work, this revolution, is “issue number one,” the restoration of the proper relationship between the sexes, the freeing of love and sexuality from existing patterns of power and control and, most importantly, from fear.

A selection for anyone who wants to learn about jetmodels.
By A Customer
I had always been in the dark when it came to jet engines, and with one of my phD siblyings only telling me little of what I really wanted to know, I asked a some modelers what book they would recomend to get started. Each pointed to Kurt Schreckling's book and now I point to it as well. He gives a basic introduction into thermaldynamics and other information that is needed to understand the "why's" of the book, but always keeping in mind teh truth that most people who read it are not enginers or physics majors. The book also gives explainations of the asembly prossess the tools one would need, the parts, and in the back of the book: the plans. The book cold almost be called "The Jetmodelers Cook Book"

Good little book
By nomad123
Overall this is a good book on the basic theory and construction of a model gas turbine and I would recommend it to others with a similar interest. The book looks a little thin, but it is packed with lots of good information in small print.

I could not give the book 4 stars because there are problems with the type setting of the equations. If you already have some mathematical and engineering experience, you can probably figure out what is intended. Otherwise some of the equations could be a little confusing.

It`s good book, with some explanations, but a little old(1994), it`s a excellent book for beguiners who don`t know nothing about model turbines.

How Markets Fail: The Logic Of Economic Calamities, by John Cassidy

How Markets Fail offers a new, enlightening way to understand the force of the irrational in our volatile global economy. Why do many people contribute generously to charity but fail to save for their own retirement? What is the economic answer to global warming? Using fascinating new insights from behavioural economics, and vivid contemporary and historical examples, Cassidy explains that individual behavioural biases and kinks—such as overconfidence, envy, and a sense of altruism and fairness—all help us understand the world in ways that rational-choice economics does not. This is the book that explains both the current moment and such past and future moments. We will continue to get things wrong. But at least now we will be having the right conversation.

From Publishers Weekly
Market disasters—and the cycle of delusions responsible—receive lively, engaging analysis by Cassidy (Dot.con), a journalist at the New Yorker. The author focuses primarily on the rise and fall of free market ideology and the mostly unrealistic ideal of a self-correcting marketplace. An excellent comprehensive history of the economic thought that led to this kind of utopian economics provides a refresher course in Adam Smith, Friedrich August von Hayek, Kenneth Arrow and Hyman Minsky. Both a narrative and a call to arms, the book provides an intellectual and historical context for the string of denial and bad decisions that led to the disastrous illusion of harmony, the lure of real estate and the Great Crunch of 2008. Using psychology and behavioral economics, Cassidy presents an excellent argument that the market is not in fact self-correcting, and that only a return to reality-based economics—and a reform-minded move to shove Wall Street in that direction—can pull us out of the mess in which we've found ourselves. From Booklist
Cassidy, economist and journalist, launches a theoretical attack on Milton Friedman and the Chicago school’s free market concepts, calling them Utopian Economics, which Cassidy explains in part one. The author describes his replacement theories in part two, which give market failure a central role, calling them Reality-Based Economics. Drawing on both approaches, in part three he explains in detail his analysis of the financial crisis of 2007–2009, indicating that the subprime boom was a failure of capitalism and the financial crisis was the consequence on decisions made by private firms under deregulation. He concludes with suggestions including banks that create and distribute mortgage securities should be forced to keep approximately one-fifth on their books and federal regulators should have oversight responsibility for mortgage bankers and lenders. Everyone will not agree with the author’s theories, and although he denies this is a textbook, it will stir controversy within and outside the classroom. However, the challenging material in this book will limit its appeal to many library patrons. --Mary Whaley

Review

Praise for How Markets Fail

“Cassidy clearly knows a great deal of economics, and he tells his story extremely well . . . Many of his chapters—on the development of general equilibrium theory (how everything in the economy systematically depends on everything else), for example, or marginalism (why prices are determined by what we’re prepared to pay for the very last item of something we buy, rather than what the whole amount is worth to us)—would make useful supplementary reading in an undergraduate economics course.” —Benjamin M. Friedman, The New York Review of Books

“[A] wonderful book . . . The most concise and elegantly written account, among the many that have come out, of how we got into this mess.” —Liaquat Ahamed, The National Interest

“[How Markets Fail] brilliantly dissects much of what has passed for economic wisdom, and decries the lack of humility from those whose theories helped cause the disaster.” —Floyd Norris, The New York Times

“Highly readable . . . Cassidy offers a clear and occasionally colorful exposition of the evolution of relevant economic thought in a way that is accessible to non-economists.” —Richard N. Cooper, Foreign Affairs

“Fascinating and important.” —Eliot Spitzer, Slate

“An admirably lucid account of how ‘utopian economics’ drove us to disaster . . . This is a compelling synthesis that derives most of its narrative energy from the author’s clarity of thought and exposition.” —James Pressley, Bloomberg.com

“An essential, grittily intellectual, yet compelling guide to the financial debacle of 2009.” —Geordie Greig, London Evening Standard

“The last major attempt of 2009 to make sense of what has become of the discipline of economics.” —Stefan Stern, Financial Times (Best Books of the Year)

“A well constructed, thoughtful and cogent account of how capitalism evolved to its current form.” —Edmund Conway, The Daily Telegraph

“[How Markets Fail] is more than just an account of the failures of regulators and the self-deception of bankers and homebuyers, although these are well covered. For Mr. Cassidy, the deeper roots of the crisis lie in the enduring appeal of an idea: that society is always best served when individuals are left to pursue their self-interest in free markets . . . An ambitious book, and one that mostly succeeds.” —The Economist

“An ambitious, nuanced work that brings ideas alive . . . Cassidy makes a compelling case that a return to hands-off economics would be a disaster.”—Chris Farrell, BusinessWeek

“Brilliant.” —Paul M. Barrett, New York Times Book Review

“Both a narrative and a call to arms, [How Markets Fail] provides an intellectual and historical context for the string of denial and bad decisions that led to the disastrous ‘illusion of harmony,’ the lure of real estate and the Great Crunch of 2008. Using psychology and behavioral economics, Cassidy presents an excellent argument that the market is not in fact self-correcting, and that only a return to reality-based economics—and a reform-minded move to shove Wall Street in that direction—can pull us out of the mess in which we’ve found ourselves.” —Publishers Weekly

“An elegant, readable treatise on economics, swathed in current headlines . . . Cassidy delivers on the promise of his title, but he also offers a clear-eyed look at economic thinking over the last three centuries, from Adam Smith to Ben Bernanke, and shows how the major theories have played out in practice, often not well . . . Cassidy writes with terrific clarity and a finely tuned sense of moral outrage, yielding a superb book.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The new economics - market failure as a major descriptor
By tim
As a professional economist this book is a seminal discussion of where economics ought to be taught. The old 'micro and macro' approach should no longer be taught. I believe that the teaching of the subject should be divided into three parts (like Gaul):
1. A prelimiary discussion of the philisophy of economics and the meaning of market economics, starting with Adam Smith with his discussion of productivity and the division of labor, the invisible hand and so on, through to Jevons, with his putting supply and demand together to get prices, and Walras to get the interrelationships in the market.
2. A discussion of standard price theory, cost curves, etc, etc,. How the theory all fits together.
3. And the major new part - Market failure. Starting with Keynes, and his somewhat confused explanation of market failure in the labor market, through Minsky with his discussion of market failure in the financial market, to everything covered by this excellent book.

That is the new economics. That is the way to go.

A Great Book on What Can Go Wrong With Otherwise Superior Free Markets
By Todd Carlsen
This book shows the cold hard facts of how a free market system can fail due to certain behaviors. It's an economics history lesson showing the situations where free markets fail and the "rational" behaviors that lead to that irrational outcome, and the book debunks the Utopian myth that free markets will always self-correct and never fail. The book explains what behaviors should not be allowed that can cause the economy to collapse.

It first explains the Utopian delusion that complete laissez faire markets always works. Then it explains a much better economic framework that the author calls "reality-based economics." Then the book explains what happened economically with the economic collapse of 2008, the worst since the Great Depression. This is a great book to understand the economic collapse of 2008. More important, it explains the underlying economic dynamics at work in history to show how laissez faire is a big mistake that can bring down our global economy, and there is a better way through sensible safeguards. The author seems to know economics extremely well and can explain this information in a way that does not make your head spin.

The Wall Street Journal called this book "a marvelous book."

The Economist called this book "Shrewd and entertaining... Thoroughly persuasive."

I want to emphasize that this books is NOT an overall attack on capitalism in favor of socialism or another order. He is simply explaining the instances when free markets failed and what behaviors need to be banned to make free markets work better. He does strongly disagree with those who argue for complete laissez faire policies (advocating no rules and that markets will always self-correct).

The philosophy of laissez faire is a Utopian delusion. The facts of economic history show that laissez faire has led to market disasters, and the author presents a convincing case that certain behaviors that are rational to one person are irrational to the economy as a whole and will bring down the economy. It's like if one person leaves a football game at a big stadium in the middle of the game it does not matter, but if everyone tries to leave, you have a problem. If one person withdraws his savings from a bank it does not matter. If everyone does in a bank run, the bank will fail. If one bank fails it's not a big deal. If huge parts of the financial system collapse, lending and money flow seizes up and contracts, bringing down everything. Some risk taking behavior can be damaging to the economy, and then when that happens markets will not always self-correct.

This book gives suggestions for what the author calls reality-based markets.

The weakness of this book is that it could have explained more about past economic history, especially the Great Depression. It does not say enough about what we learned from the Great Depression and what worked (and did not work) with Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal as far as creating decades of STABLE prosperity built upon the economic safeguards of the New Deal.

For example, originally, Franklin Roosevelt created the FHA to create modern 30 year mortgages that brought home ownership to millions for the first time. FDR gave home ownerships to millions, fueling the great post-war boom. The FHA back then required that borrowers show their credit worthiness, imposed lending rules, and required a certain amount of down payment (I think it was 20%) so people could not buy mortgages they could not afford and could not handle. Government back then with the New Deal was strict about financial security and worked to ensure the basic economic security of America. That era of post-war prosperity, built on the New Deal, was stable and not overly-speculative. The New Deal was designed to save and strengthen capitalism with pragmatic rules, and decades of stable middle class prosperity followed.

Then decades later when Bush Jr was president, some numb-skulls (certain members of congress, the ownership society president, and lobbyists) decided to make Fannie and Freddie give loans to people who could not handle them. Regulations were relaxed and liar loans were allowed where you did not even have to prove your income. Mortgage insurance secured this house of cards. Like climbers going up a mountain chained together, when the liar loans and mortgage-backed securities went bust, all the climbers fell together from the mountain. It seems that everyone had totally forgot about what happened to the financial system during the Great Depression.
I think people should go back and look at the parts of the New Deal that worked well, such as FDIC to insure bank deposits and forever end bank runs, SEC to require audited financial statements and securities regulation for information disclosure and bad fraud, FHA, Glass-Stegal Act to put firewalls in the financial system, the constant fiscal stimulus of social security when private sector spending plunges, and the clear understanding in society and government that extreme risk taking for for profit could bring down the economy and extreme risk was not allowed.

I want to concur with the review written by Mark V Anderson below. Yes, some self-interested behaviors in a free market system can cause the economic system to collapse and those behaviors should be banned. However, overall free markets (with sensible rules enforced fairly by referees) are better than communism or socialism or fascism or anything else. Also, governments can make mistakes.

We do need government to ban certain bad behaviors and extreme greed at the expense of those who work hard and play by the rules, but let's not only point the finger at what can go wrong with free markets. Free markets work best with sensible rules. Ronald Reagan was a New Dealer but then said that government went off track since then. Also, Reagan wrote in his autobiography that he supported a basic safety net for the elderly, disabled and orphans, but not the explosion in the cost and ineffectiveness of welfare.

There are four other books I would also recommend along with this book for a fuller picture:

1. Stabilizing an Unstable Economy. This is a landmark economics book explaining how a free market economy can become unstable and then how to stabilize it.
2. Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World. This book won the Pulitzer Prize.
3. John Maynard Keynes. This debunks some myths about Keynes's general theory, explaining how Keynes showed that capitalism is unstable and what to do about it. Later Keynesian policies espoused by other were never articulated in Keynes General theory.
4. Bad Samaritans: The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism. Capitalist countries, including USA, Japan, Korea, and many others, have become prosperous through big government economic investments and protections of economics interests (not pure free markets).

Financial Wake-Up Call
By Jack Bob
This was a thoroughly engaging read that clearly explained the many factors that led to the financial collapse.

While I would recommend reading with easy access to the internet to look up unfamiliar terms, for the most part the book explains how things like Credit Default Swaps and Collateralized Mortgage Securities work without going into the byzantine details of exactly how these products are created and marketed, since only general concepts of how they work are required for understanding. However, if you are curious are all the acronyms that are tossed around when dealing with the financial collapse, this is a good place to start.

Book is split up into three parts: a brief overview of the historical underpinnings of free market economics, an academic critique of some of some of the assumptions about markets, and a detailed set up of how the financial collapse was in part caused by the prevailing view of the market which ignored earlier academic critiques.

The next sizzling novel of C. L. Parker’s Monkey Business Trio

Hotshot San Diego sports agent Shaw Matthews and his sexy professional adversary Cassidy Whalen have gone head-to-head in the boardroom—and the bedroom. Now Shaw has scored a big promotion—but only because Cassidy turned it down and ran off. There are many things he wants when it comes to Cassidy—just not her pity. So Shaw rushes to a small town in Maine to retrieve his dignity—and maybe the woman he’s hungry to claim once more.

Cassidy has pushed herself to the max to realize her career dreams—until a family crisis brings her home. But Shaw isn’t letting Cassidy go that easily. Neither is gorgeous heartthrob Casey Michaels, the childhood sweetheart she left behind—and who now wants to win her back. As the rivalry between the two alpha males intensifies, and Shaw’s seductive moves reach a whole new level of heat, Cassidy has to make a choice. And this time, it’s for the highest stakes of all.

Getting Rough is intended for mature audiences.

About the Author
C. L. Parker is a romance author who writes stories that sizzle. She’s a small-town girl with big-city dreams and enough tenacity to see them come to fruition. Having been the outgoing sort all her life—which translates to “she just wouldn’t shut the hell up”—it’s no wonder Parker eventually turned to writing as a way to let her voice, and those of the people living inside her head, be heard. She loves hard, laughs until it hurts, and lives like there’s no tomorrow. In her world, everything truly does happen for a reason.

Chapter 1

Shaw

“Simi, where the fuck am I?” I growled into my cellphone.

“I don’t know, asshole,” would’ve been an acceptable comeback, given my level of rudeness, but my ever-professional virtual assistant kept her cool. “You’re traveling south on Upper Falls Road.”

You’re, a contraction from a voice-recognition program. Wasn’t technology nifty? Nifty, but not a whole lot of help. Left to figure it out on my own, I had to draw only slightly conceivable conclusions. The best I could tell, the flight I’d taken to Bangor, Maine, had somehow veered off course and into the Bermuda Triangle, which I was now convinced was a wormhole to an alternate universe where interstates hadn’t yet been invented. That or all of this had been an elaborate scheme that my arch nemesis/part-time lover, Cassidy Whalen, had come up with in order to lure me away to a place where she could continue her torture routine and then eat my liver before dumping my body where no one could find it.

Truthfully, I’d be okay with the slightly creepy murder because being forced to endure that look of pity on her face every day for the foreseeable future was a fate worse than death.

I dropped my phone in the nook next to the gearshift, none too gently, thanks to my mounting frustration. I was exhausted, running on fumes after a ten-and-a-half-hour flight and nearing a two-hour drive. My stomach was gnawing at me from the inside, which I suspected was simply for the sole purpose of going in search of food on its own, since I’d placated it only with airplane peanuts.

Simi dinged, either to warn me to take it easier on her delicate structure or to issue a reminder to bust a right onto yet another state route on my journey through God’s country. Thirty-six more miles on winding roads to the island that laid claim to a small fishing village called Stonington. Cassidy’s stomping ground. What in the world was I thinking when I’d decided to hop that flight? Oh, right . . . I’d wanted to give her a piece of my mind. But right now, I wanted a piece of chicken to put in my belly.

Making a left into the parking lot of a gas station, I parked the compact rental car I’d been forced into when no other option had been available and got out. The cartoon chicken on the sign in the window shouldn’t have made me salivate, but it did. Maybe I was on the verge of delirium because gas station chicken wasn’t a smart decision. I’d pay for it later.

The kid behind the counter was patient as I decided between chicken chicken, chicken tenders, or chicken nuggets. As he gathered my tenders and potato wedges, I thought I’d double-check that Simi knew what she was talking about, though I might have used a hushed voice to make sure she couldn’t hear me doing so. The last thing I needed was for her to get an attitude about me not trusting her. Women could be so testy. Even virtual women.

“Hey . . . Dale,” I started, reading his nametag. “Is it normal for there to be a lot of back roads around here instead of interstates?”

Chicken Dale half-laughed. I guess he got that question a lot. “Yep. Where are you going?”

“Uh, Stonington,” I said, taking my boxed meal.

He drew his head back like what I’d said was unusual. “Stonington?”

“Yeah. Why, am I going in the wrong direction? I knew it,” I said, adding a curse under my breath.

“No, you’re going in the right direction. It’s just that no one goes to Stonington unless they’re a local.”

“Is that a bad thing?”

He laughed again. “Depends on who you ask.”

“Great,” I said with a sarcastic smile. “Thanks, man.” I took my box, noticing the grease stains already soaking through. “I’m not going to die from eating this, am I?”

His shrug and expression said it could go either way. I’d make it, or I wouldn’t. Oh, well. We all had to go sometime.

After paying for my heart attack in a box and bottled water, I got back on the road. At least what was supposed to pass for a road, anyway. The winding, unpainted pavement was bad enough, but the bumps along the way reminded me of being a kid in a shopping cart passing over a grooved sidewalk, the vibration from each notch making my ahhhh sound like a symphony of vocal acrobats. I might have even tried it out to prove a point, since there was no one else around to see me making an ass of myself. Until my phone rang, that is.

“Hello?” I cleared my throat, trying not to sound so much like a bullfrog was lodged in it. “Ben?”

“Yo, boss man!” came his far too exuberant response. “How’s Maine?”

“So far, so shitty. What’d you find for me?”

“Well, there are only two places to choose from and one is booked, if you can believe that, but I did score you a nice room at the Whalen House.”

For some reason a massive migraine decided to strike like a lightning bolt from out of nowhere. “Wait. Did you just say Whalen?”

“Yep. And it’s exactly what you think.” I could hear the smile in his voice. “Lair of the ice queen, herself. Cassidy’s parents own the joint. Per the four-and-a-half-star review, it’s a quaint little bed-and-breakfast with a family atmosphere and all the amenities of home. You should fit right in.”

I would’ve growled at him if I’d had the energy. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“A little bit.” At least he was honest with me. Unlike Cassidy.

“There’s no other choice?”

“Nope.”

“I’m firing you when I get back.”

“Sure thing, boss. In the meantime, I’m pushing Denver’s contract through to make everything real nice and legal.”

Denver “Rocket Man” Rockford was where all of this had started. Cassidy Whalen and I had been in competition to represent the most coveted quarterback in the league and earn a slice of his pie, along with a partnership at Striker Sports Entertainment. I’d won. On a technicality. Denver had offered the contract to Cassidy first, but she’d turned it down and insisted he give it to me. All after she’d found out I wasn’t the rich playboy I’d let everyone believe I was. If she hadn’t been so goddamn nosy, so judgmental, so determined to pick me apart like I was a toad spread-eagle on a metal tray, I wouldn’t be in a stupid tin can on a fucked-up road heading to a place no one else has ever even heard of.

I shoved my hand inside the greasy box, regretting it instantly when I found the scalding wedges, which must have been pulled from the vat of oil right as I’d walked into the gas station. “Son of a bitch!”

“Okay . . . I can hold it, if you want me to. But I’ve gotta ask. Are you actually changing your mind about scoring the biggest deal of your life?” I’d almost forgotten Ben was on the phone. Maybe I hadn’t been far off the mark with the delirium thing.

“Is that even a real question? Of course not. I just burned myself,” I said, sucking on the wounded finger.

“Funny, I didn’t feel a thing. Ba-dum-bum-ching!” He was a hairsbreadth away from being replaced by Simi.

“Grow up, Ben,” I said, taking charge and acting like a real boss. “Book the room, get the contract on Wade’s desk, and get me on a flight out of here first thing tomorrow morning.”

“You got it. But, uh,” he hedged.

“Spit it out.” I was quickly losing what little patience I had left.

“Just a heads-up, there’s a nasty bit of weather forecasted for Maine over the next few days. Best be prepared for a longer stay, mate.”

“Then you better make sure you get me out of here before it does because I have zero intention of sticking around any longer than I have to, so call me with the details once you’ve got them.” With that, I hung up and tried to get my greasy grub on again.

Having zero intention of sticking around any longer than I had to was exactly right, but it wasn’t like I had a reason to be here in the first place. Christ, what the fuck was I doing in friggin’ Maine? See, Cassidy Whalen had this way about her that got into my head and made me act like a stark raving mad lunatic. Because of that woman, I’d done things I’d never do. Like seduce a co-worker in order to win a contract. Or at least, I’d tried to seduce her. It had backfired. Sort of. But at least I’d gotten my rocks off a time or two in the process, so consolation prize and all. Thing was, I didn’t do second place well, and my consolation prize had skipped town and taken her delectable little pussy with her. I wasn’t okay with that.

Shit. Why wasn’t I okay with that? Over the years, I’d built up a wall to keep the crazy out, and bit by bit, she’d been chiseling away at it and making me feel things. I shivered, the horror of that thought prancing down my spine like a thousand tiny Cassidys doing their victory dances.

Don’t get me wrong, the whole feeling things didn’t mean I’d fallen in love with her or anything. No, the things she made me feel were the same emotions I’d left behind the night I’d watched a man get his head blown off right in front of my eyes. I’d been just a kid, but living in Detroit is a game of survival I’d been forced to learn early on. Feelings equaled weakness. And it wasn’t like I had parents to shelter me from all that bullshit either. My folks couldn’t give a shit whether I lived or died. Hell, they probably would have preferred I’d died because at least then maybe they could collect some sort of check on me.

With a frustrated growl, I shook the fucked-up situation with my parents out of my head because thoughts like those wouldn’t further my goals in life. They were behind me. That life was behind me. I’d been moving forward since the day I became a man at the ripe old age of nine. Having no mother to coddle you after you’d just witnessed a brutal, bloody murder sort of put things in perspective. No one was going to take care of that little boy but the man he was meant to be. And the only way anyone could ever hurt me was if I gave them the ammunition to do so.

I’d worked hard to make my way in life. And I’d taken every opportunity I could to further my cause, but being handed a contract that had originally been offered to a fucking woman smarted. It was emasculating. Though I had no intention of backing down from the mother of all contracts, regardless of how I’d gotten it, the first thing I needed to do was reclaim my manhood. And at the moment, Cassidy Whalen was holding my balls in her purse. Once I got them back, I could put her and all the touchy-feely stuff behind me once and for all.

Deer Isle–Sedgwick Bridge loomed before me like a four-hundred-foot iron sentry that would either grant access to my destination or turn into a rolling and twisting amusement park ride to dump me into the waters of Eggemoggin Reach below. Obviously, the amusement would not be mine. But as luck would have it, I crossed without issue. The steel suspension cables even stayed in place, and I was fairly certain the ominous laughter I’d thought I’d heard had been only my imagination having playtime with the natural creeks and groans of metal on metal. Christ, I needed some sleep before the boulders scattered about the landscape turned into rock people frolicking through blueberry fields.

Rock people did not exist. Just like the bumps in the road were not made by genetically altered super mole spies with ninja reflexes sent to keep track of me, and the sandbar supporting the causeway to Deer Isle would not turn into quicksand to suck me down to Middle Earth. But my phone was ringing.

Cannot Get Enough!!!
By Ashley S.
"It's the eye of the storm," he whispered. "But it isn't over yet. In fact, things are about to get rough again. Are you ready?"

I certainly thought I was ready, but I had no idea what I was actually getting myself into emotionally. Getting Rough, as mentioned by C.L. Parker in her Author's Notes, was a very personal journey of breaking down walls, coming to accept new things in life, and, ultimately, taking exactly what you want out of that life. I cannot even begin to describe how evident she made that for her readers throughout the whole story and, thinking back on it, now everything makes a whole lot more sense. The heart that she poured into this book is what makes it a 6+++ star favorite for me. Not only did she have me laughing hysterically at Shaw and his antics and thoughts, but also hoping for so much more from two characters who could not have been more perfect for one another. It is rough at some points (as the title suggests) with two such dominant characters vying for what they think will fulfill their lives while allowing their stubborn personalities to crush all thoughts of happiness at the same time; Shaw's broken past that has led him to a guarded present and Cassidy's fairytale upbringing that is keeping her from finding her true Happily Ever After.

As we move through the book, we see old walls crumbling and new ones being forged with the love of family (and unofficial family), acceptance of a past that is no more, and the hope of a future that can heal two lost souls. The chemistry and banter between the H and h, although expected by how amazing it was in the first book. was even better this time around. Being in a different setting with more personal realizations coming to the forefront made it possible for reality to break through and knock both Shaw and Cassidy on their asses. It was fabulous to experience since I'm sure most readers, myself included, wanted them to recognize exactly what we have been seeing in two books now. I have to say that I loved everything about this book; from the lightheartedness to the more serious and then to the most serious, the childhood fantasies that became reality, and the lust that turned into love. This book had it all for me and I would be remiss if I didn't put my highest recommendation behind it. Well done, once again, Ms. Parker. I will be one of the first to pick up Coming Clean upon release!

...funny, adorable & erotic & moving second book in this amazing series!!!
By Bianca @BJsBB
4.9 Stars
Do we all remember how the first book ended?
I had to do a little re-read to remember >> #BooksAlzheimers!!!
Cassidy and Shaw were both fighting with all they had to get the partner position in their sports agency.
And at the end of book #1 Cassidy would've signed this most important client, which would've gotten her the job - BUT - she declined and let Shaw have it all! He accepted, but he can't be bested by a girl just like that!!!
Why did she do that? Why did she let him win?
Because he told her about his sad childhood? Because they had sex? Why?
Only one way to find out - ask her!
But she's gone!
Gone home to Maine, to take care of her parents' Bed & Breakfast, because her mom broke her leg.
And what does Shaw do? Call her? Nope - he follows her to Stonington, Maine. This adorable little fisher island town.

But Shaw is not the only one after Cass.
There's also her bestest and oldest friend Casey.
The hottest guy in town. And he's still single and still interested!
Casey was always hoping for a happy ever after with the girl he grew up with.
And Shaw? Never did any happy ever after thought ever cross his mind. But Cassidy?
She changed him.

Lots of sexiness happens in Maine....
But of course our darlings will still have some fighting to do, to get to their Happy Ever After!!!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SHAW & CASSIDY??
WILL THERE BE A HAPPY END????
What about Casey? What about this new character Mia?
Will there be a horrible Cliffhanger??
I'm not telling you, of course ☺
Ok, there WILL be a tiny little Cliffy ...

Great 2nd book!
I really enjoyed it!
It was something completely different from the first one. We're not in San Diego anymore - no boardroom deals - no suits - no big money.
We're in this cute little town where everybody know everybody else's business.
And poor Shaw doesn't fit in at all. He would love to fit in though.
All that home-cooking and cookie-baking and those nice old ladies. He wishes that one of them would adopt him. He had a horrible childhood back in Detroit.
But he's not in town to get adopted. He wants to talk to Cassidy - and maybe take her to bed a few times - and then go back home.
But there's this Casey guy sniffing around his Cassidy!!!
It was so adorable to read about poor Shaw fighting for something he didn't even know he wanted.
We have LOTS of verrrry sexy scenes!!!
And lots of very moving scenes!!!
Poor Shaw, poor Casey --- lots of awwww moments!

I really enjoyed this book - and I loved the location and Cassidy's & Casey's family. All so adorable and loving.

Were there some things I didn't like?
Hmm....maybe the way Shaw talks too much to us or rather to himself. He digresses here and there and everywhere - it's a tiny bit too much. But he's still an amazingly cool guy!!!
Also - this whole second book was NOTHING like the first one.
I kinda had this whole cheesy Nora Roberts Romance Feeling.
This cozy little island with lots of sexi romance happening. BUT I loved that - it was just so far away from book #1 and from how our darlings acted in book #1 ☺

►► GETTING ROUGH was the perfect second book in this series!
Very funny & adorable & moving & erotic!! Go and get yourself some Shaw & Casey! ♥
And please Ms. Parker - GIVE. ME. COMING. CLEAN. asap!!!☺☺☺

just as good as the first
By Booklover Mary
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

When Shaw finds out that Cassidy has left San Diego for her Maine hometown, his first thought was to go after her and let her know that he didn't like her "letting" him win, so that's what he did. He couldn't let get away with feeling sorry for him and giving him the partnership. He wanted to earn it, like he did everything else in his life.

Cassidy didn't let Shaw win. She turned the contract down because her family was more important than being made partner at the sports agency where they worked. Her Dad had called and told her that her mother was in the hospital and they would need help keeping the B&B that her mother owned going while she recouperated.

Shaw was surprised to learn that Cassidy hadn't turned down the offer to represent Denver due to her feelings for him, but rather because of her feelings and obligation to her family. Never having had a typical, or even an atypical family, he doesn't know how to process it. Determined to learn more about this side of Cassidy, he decides to stay for a few more days.

Cassidy is glad that she can be of help to her parents, but she's already tired of the inevitable questions about how long she's staying and when she's coming home for good. Grateful for the Casey's friendship, she relies on him to the buffer she needs, even though their romance ended long ago.

During the time Shaw and Cassidy spends in Maine, each come to some hard and harsh realizations about themselves and each other. When it comes down to it, its time to shut up or grow up.
