This is the Uncensored 1818 Edition FRANKENSTEIN; OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS, a novel written by the English author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley about the young science student Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque but sentient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Shelley had travelled through Europe in 1814, journeying along the river Rhine in Germany with a stop in Gernsheim which is just 17 km away from Frankenstein Castle, where, two centuries before, an alchemist was engaged in experiments. Later, she travelled in the region of Geneva (Switzerland)-where much of the story takes place-and the topic of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy Shelley. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made; her dream later evolved into the novel's story.

Shelley completed her writing in May 1817, and Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was first published on 11 March 1818 by the small London publishing house of Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor, & Jones. The second edition of Frankenstein was published on 11 August 1822 in two volumes (by G. and W. B. Whittaker) following the success of the stage play Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein by Richard Brinsley Peake; this edition credited Mary Shelley as the author.

On 31 October 1831, the first "popular" edition in one volume appeared, published by Henry Colburn & Richard Bentley. This edition was heavily revised by Mary Shelley, partially because of pressure to make the story more conservative, and included a new, longer preface by her, presenting a somewhat embellished version of the genesis of the story. This edition tends to be the one most widely read now, although editions containing the original 1818 text are still published. Many scholars prefer the 1818 text, arguing that it preserves the spirit of Shelley's original publication

Chapter 1

I am by birth a Genevese; and my family is one of the most distinguished of that republic. My ancestors had been for many years counsellors and syndics; and my father had filled several public situations with honour and reputation. He was respected by all who knew him for his integrity and indefatigable attention to public business. He passed his younger days perpetually occupied by the affairs of his country; and it was not until the decline of life that he thought of marrying, and bestowing on the state sons who might carry his virtues and his name down to posterity.

As the circumstances of his marriage illustrate his character, I cannot refrain from relating them. One of his most intimate friends was a merchant, who, from a flourishing state, fell, through numerous mischances, into poverty. This man, whose name was Beaufort, was of a proud and unbending disposition, and could not bear to live in poverty and oblivion in the same country where he had formerly been distinguished for his rank and magnificence. Having paid his debts, therefore, in the most honourable manner, he retreated with his daughter to the town of Lucerne, where he lived unknown and in wretchedness. My father loved Beaufort with the truest friendship, and was deeply grieved by his retreat in these unfortunate circumstances. He grieved also for the loss of his society, and resolved to seek him out and endeavour to persuade him to begin the world again through his credit and assistance.

Beaufort had taken effectual measures to conceal himself; and it was ten months before my father discovered his abode. Overjoyed at this discovery, he hastened to the house, which was situated in a mean street, near the Reuss. But when he entered, misery and despair alone welcomed him. Beaufort had saved but a very small sum of money from the wreck of his fortunes; but it was sufficient to provide him with sustenance for some months, and in the mean time he hoped to procure some respectable employment in a merchant's house. The interval was consequently spent in inaction; his grief only became more deep and rankling, when he had leisure for reflection; and at length it took so fast hold of his mind, that at the end of three months he lay on a bed of sickness, incapable of any exertion.

His daughter attended him with the greatest tenderness; but she saw with despair that their little fund was rapidly decreasing, and that there was no other prospect of support. But Caroline Beaufort possessed a mind of an uncommon mould; and her courage rose to support her in her adversity. She procured plain work; she plaited straw; and by various means contrived to earn a pittance scarcely sufficient to support life.

Several months passed in this manner. Her father grew worse; her time was more entirely occupied in attending him; her means of subsistence decreased; and in the tenth month her father died in her arms, leaving her an orphan and a beggar. This last blow overcame her; and she knelt by Beaufort's coffin, weeping bitterly, when my father entered the chamber. He came like a protecting spirit to the poor girl, who committed herself to his care, and after the interment of his friend he conducted her to Geneva, and placed her under the protection of a relation. Two years after this event Caroline became his wife.

When my father became a husband and a parent, he found his time so occupied by the duties of his new situation, that he relinquished many of his public employments, and devoted himself to the education of his children. Of these I was the eldest, and the destined successor to all his labours and utility. No creature could have more tender parents than mine. My improvement and health were their constant care, especially as I remained for several years their only child. But before I continue my narrative, I must record an incident which took place when I was four years of age.

My father had a sister, whom he tenderly loved, and who had married early in life an Italian gentleman. Soon after her marriage, she had accompanied her husband into his native country, and for some years my father had very little communication with her. About the time I mentioned she died; and a few months afterwards he received a letter from her husband, acquainting him with his intention of marrying an Italian lady, and requesting my father to take charge of the infant Elizabeth, the only child of his deceased sister. "It is my wish," he said, "that you should consider her as your own daughter, and educate her thus. Her mother's fortune is secured to her, the documents of which I will commit to your keeping. Reflect upon this proposition; and decide whether you would prefer educating your niece yourself to her being brought up by a stepmother."

My father did not hesitate, and immediately went to Italy, that he might accompany the little Elizabeth to her future home. I have often heard my mother say, that she was at that time the most beautiful child she had ever seen, and shewed signs even then of a gentle and affectionate disposition. These indications, and a desire to bind as closely as possible the ties of domestic love, determined my mother to consider Elizabeth as my future wife; a design which she never found reason to repent.

From this time Elizabeth Lavenza became my playfellow, and, as we grew older, my friend. She was docile and good tempered, yet gay and playful as a summer insect. Although she was lively and animated, her feelings were strong and deep, and her disposition uncommonly affectionate. No one could better enjoy liberty, yet no one could submit with more grace than she did to constraint and caprice. Her imagination was luxuriant, yet her capability of application was great. Her person was the image of her mind; her hazel eyes, although as lively as a bird's, possessed an attractive softness. Her figure was light and airy; and, though capable of enduring great fatigue, she appeared the most fragile creature in the world. While I admired her understanding and fancy, I loved to tend on her, as I should on a favourite animal; and I never saw so much grace both of person and mind united to so little pretension.

Every one adored Elizabeth. If the servants had any request to make, it was always through her intercession. We were strangers to any species of disunion or dispute. For, although there was a great dissimilitude in our characters, yet there was an harmony in that very dissimilitude. I was more calm and philosophical than my companion. Yet I was not so mild or yielding. My application was of longer endurance, but it was not so severe whilst it endured. I delighted in investigating the facts relating to the actual world–she busied herself in following the aerial creations of the poets. The world was to me a secret which I desired to discover–to her it was a vacancy which she sought to people with imaginations of her own.

My brothers were considerably younger than myself, but I had a friend in one of my schoolfellows who compensated for this deficiency. Henry Clerval was the son of a merchant of Geneva, an intimate friend of my father. He was a boy of singular talent and fancy. I remember when he was only nine years old he wrote a fairy tale which was the delight and amazement of all his companions. His favourite study consisted in books of chivalry and romance; and, when very young, I can remember that we used to act plays composed by him out of these books, the principal characters of which were Orlando, Robin Hood, Amadis, and St. George. No youth could be more happy than mine. My parents were indulgent, and my companions amiable. Our studies were never forced, and by some means we always had an end placed in view which excited us to ardour in the prosecution of them. It was by this method, not by emulation, that we were urged. Elizabeth was not told to apply herself to drawing that her companions might not outstrip her, but by the desire of pleasing her aunt by the representation of some favourite scene done by her own hand. We learned Latin and English that we might read the writings in those languages; and, so far from study being rendered odious to us through punishment, we loved application, and our amusements would have been the labours of other children. Perhaps we did not read so many books or learn languages so quickly as those who are disciplined according to the ordinary method, but what we learned was impressed the more deeply on our memory. In the description of our domestic circle I include Henry Clerval, for he was constantly with us. He went to school with me and generally passed the afternoon at our house; for being an only child, and destitute of companions at home, his father was pleased that he should find associates at our house; and we were never completely happy when Clerval was absent.

and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature

If you're reading this review, you only have one question. You're not looking for a book review, you already know it's a classic. You already know this is the most original, and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature. You may or may not like the story, but that's a matter of personal taste. A lot of people don't like Shakespeare, but no one questions whether he was a good writer or not. If you don't like the writing style, it's because you aren't familiar with the English of this period. Nearly eighty years before Stoker's "Dracula" ( an idea stolen from Polidori's "The Vampyre", which was an idea stolen from LeFanu's "Carmilla"), this most-original horror masterpiece was born. So, your only question is, "Is this really the uncensored 1818 version? Because I've only seen one other verified version, and it's over twenty dollars in paperback. All the others claiming to be the 1818 version have been disproved." YES, as far as I can tell, it is. The only preface is Shelley's own original. There is no introduction, no commentary or editorial credits whatsoever. There are no illustrations, and the spelling and language have not been edited. Have a good thesaurus handy. So, here it is, the author's original script, no frills, for a bargain price. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Different from other versions - great illustrations

It's surprising how many times this novel has been edited and re-created. Or not surprising, since it is so unsettling one wants to rewrite the key scenes and ending to suit modern emotional sensibilities. We had a great book club reading of it where everyone read a different version and we all got different impressions. But the eloquence and genius of Mary Shelley was evident and strong in this version and I find her original impulses (even marrying Victor to his first cousin) pure and quite defensible. This is an enduring masterpiece because we continue to make monsters with technology (and as parents) when we are blinded by our own lust to create, and when we do not take responsibility or show love for the created thing.

Original 1818 text makes this book GREAT!

This is a wonderful book and it is quite different from the movies! The intro is great and there are foot notes thru it. It's the original 1818 text and that is one of the things that make it so great.

Okay fantasy

I’ve only read a few fantasy novels. One fantasy novel I read was “The Reluctant Swordsman”. That book had an unusual beginning, interesting characters and a clever ending. (I gave that book 5 stars.) I felt The Black Prism was not as good. (I would have given The Black Prism 3.5 stars if Amazon ratings allowed fractions.)

The beginning of The Black Prism was of the somewhat conventional escape-or-die variety. The story itself was too reliant on either the application of magic or epic battles to keep the story moving along. Two of the main characters (Gavin and Kip) evolved as the story progressed, but the other characters remained one-dimensional. And the ending was essentially a set of cliffhangers.
On the positive side, I did enjoy the many instances of “palace intrigue”. Also, the world of color-based magic was well fleshed-out (though not particularly entertaining to read about -- indeed, to help the reader understand this magic, one of the story’s characters was given the task of mentoring another on the workings of color-based magic).

Easily the best fantasy series I've read so far

As a voracious reader of fantasy, I've read just about every series out there. The Sword of Truth series, the Kingkiller Chronicles, the Codex Alera series, and The Stormlight Archive just to name a few. What usually bothers me is is just how straightforward the story arch can be. The good guy is miraculously good, discovers incredible powers, fights against bad guy (who is nothing but evil), and succeeds at the very last moment. Sometimes characters are intended to seem intelligent yet they succeed almost purely on luck. In some series the plot will be varied and fascinating, but the writing style will be so verbose you find yourself sloggin through pages and pages to get to the next big thing. Then the story becomes an excercise in waiting for something you know is going to happen.

Brent Weeks' writing style, however, is none of that.

To me the most interesting thing about Brent Weeks is not the twisting and turning of the plot. It's the careful attention he gives to the pacing. He'll cut away from a certain character, leaving you desperately wondering what happens next, but then move into something else completely fascinating and new. You'll forget for a moment how desperate you are to see the next big event. Instead the new perspective is always a perfect compliment, enhancing clarity and furthering the plot in ways that the main story arch could never provide. Even if you do get bored, it wont be for long. There's always something crucial to be seen or learned just a few pages away.

If you like complex world-building that's beautifully creative and easy to understand...
If you like a fast-paced storyline yet appreciate character development...
If you like to see evil and good and everything in between all mixed together...
If you like characters who act as intelligently or stupidly as their personality demands...
If you like social commentary through a diverse cast who each believe in their own principles...
If you like a plot that moves forward by more than the characters' need to not die or not let the bad guy win...
If you like a story that has no clear endgame...
If you like good writing that doesn't bog the story down by being overly styled or descriptive...

This is the series for you.

Ugh, is this YA and no one told me?

Other people have written extensively about the shortcomings of this book so I won't belabor the point. I didn't like the characters. I got through 60% of the book before I had to put it down because I couldn't stand the prattle between them that I think we are supposed to find engaging and amusing. There's something disjointed about a whiny teenager complaining through a war zone as if he's walking through the halls of this junior high. I just couldn't find his character believable.

Like children with other learning differences, gifted children often need specialized curriculum and support in order to achieve academic and social success throughout their school experiences. Gifted children have exceptional abilities in one or more learning domains (e.g., mathematics, music, athletics). Without coaching or special support these children may become bored or frustrated with school. They may develop poor work and study habits. Gifted students may feel out of place with same-age peers, seeking friendships with older children who share their interests. Early enrichment and intervention is important in order to set learning patterns for any child with special abilities or needs. Early identification can make a significant difference to a child who is a gifted learner.

The Gifted and Talented Series by Gifted Games (Gateway Gifted Resources) helps prepare young children for Gifted and Talented testing (NNAT2, OLSAT, and COGAT). These fun workbooks are developmentally appropriate for young children and offer practice opportunities for testing in reasoning, problem solving, and cognitive tasks. To keep children motivated and make learning fun, the test prep books use a detective theme “Gifted Detective Agency” as an incentive to finish the workbooks.

Each workbook targets one or more TAG tests. The workbooks have 5 parts, each designed to prepare a young child for gifted and talented tests.
(1) The introduction provides an overview of TAG tests covered in the workbook. Information is provided about the workbook, test taking tips, and information on the “Gifted Detective agency.”
(2) The workbook Section consists of skill building activities and exercises similar to ones in the tests.

Review of Gifted and Talented Series Workbook for the OLSAT, COGAT, NNAT2:

The workbook is a fun and valuable resource to prepare preschool and kindergarten children for talented and gifted tests (OLSAT, COGAT, NNAT2). The workbook questions are designed (patterns, figures, shapes, and colors) to simulate the test taking experience. In addition to the practice tests, this book is a valuable resource for parents embarking on TAG testing for their children. The introduction provides descriptions of the different TAG tests and notes on developmental practices in test taking for young children. For example, on some tests preschool children will not have to fill in the answer bubble, they may be asked to point to it. The introduction also provides test taking tips to help parents make test taking fun and relaxing for their child.

As a parent and an educator I highly recommend this Gifted and Talented Series Workbook. While testing young children can sometimes be controversial, it is critical to identify any child who is in need of specialized curriculum. Sometimes talented and gifted children are overlooked and that can negatively impact academic and social experiences. The Gifted and Talented Test Preparation Book is fun and may reduce test taking stress.

This is a great book for g&t test preparation. My soon-to-be 5 year-old grandson was really interested in it. The very bright, colorful design appeals to kids his age, and we found the exercises fun and challenging.

Excellent And Fun Test Prep Workbook

Gifted children are often bored and frustrated in a regular level classroom. They may exhibit difficult behavior and not relate well to the other children. In a classroom with other gifted children, they will be happier and develop their intellect to even greater levels.

Gateway Gifted Resources has developed this terrific workbook to help prepare your child for the OLSAT, COGAT and NNAT2 tests to determine whether your child is a candidate for a gifted level curriculum. This workbook is geared for children in the preschool and kindergarten levels.

Children need to learn to follow directions, learn to be focused and listen carefully. Parents should work with their children so they understand how to approach the questions. Questions are easy at first in order to build confidence.

The format is colorful, cute and all-around kid-friendly.

Practice questions for all three of the tests are towards the back of the workbook.
There is an answer keys and directions section for parents there, as well.

Children who finish the workbook will become members of the Gifted Detective Agency and will be awarded a personal certificate. What fun!

A Must Read classic

These timeless pieces of sage advice are capture in the seminal work of Dale Carnegie, Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business.
First published in 1926, Dale Carnegie spent a life in pursuit of man's potential. More than mere positive thinking, it is a book of ideas. Specifically, Carnegie states that "only an ignoramus is positive about everything". However putting positive energy behind what you say will make anyone shine.

This book centers on the importance of public speaking. You may say that you already are a good speaker or don't like to speak at all. This may be true but the art of influencing other is in sharing ideas through speaking.

Excellent, Through and Engaging

This has been a wonderful addition to my [bread] baking library, though it covers much more than bread baking alone. The introductory chapters have a lot of information that is often overlooked by many authors, including notes on determining friction factor (i.e. the degree to which a mixer or hand-kneading will raise the temperature of a dough), maintaining appropriate dough temperatures by adjusting the temperature of water added to doughs - even including a formula for determining how much ice needs to be added to a volume of water to cool it to the appropriate level to maintain dough temperatures.

As mentioned, the first few chapters are rather dry and technical, but these chapters are crucial in understanding how baking works and, in taking the time to read and understand these chapters, one can gain the technical prowess needed to troubleshoot baking problems and ultimately greatly improve their baking.

The remainder of the book is dedicated to formulas, and let me tell you the formulas are fantastic. Note that there are NO VOLUMETRIC FORMULAS INCLUDED - ALL THE FORMULAS ARE DONE BY MASS (GRAMS/OUNCES)! For those of us that wish to have consistent, excellent results, this is no surprise and is very much welcomed. Personally, I tend to avoid baking books that give formulas in cups and tablespoons rather than grams, as I don't want to have to do all the conversions to mass (and ultimately bakers percentages) myself. The ingredient lists in the formulas (recipes) are given in 3 columns: US weights (pounds, ounces), metric weights (grams) and finally (and most useful) bakers percentages. After the ingredient list, the procedure is clearly listed in a step-by-step manner that ensures mistakes are avoided.

I've only tried a handful of the formulas, but they seem to be very solid and, the few that I've tried, have produced great results. I've looked over many of the formulas and compared some of them (like the brioche formula, for instance) to my more tried and true formulas - those that I've tested and know to be successful. My brioche formula, for instance, is based on the one described by Raymond Calvel in "The Taste of Bread." The sugar in Gisslen's formula is less than half of that used in Calvel's; Gisslen uses 15% more butter in his formula than Calvel does. Aside from this, the differences are rather minimal, differing by only around 5-10%. The procedure itself bears some similarities to Calvel's, and I'm interested to see how the final products compare.

Gisslen's formulas use instant yeast, and although I prefer formulas that use fresh yeast (which are increasingly hard to find), instant yeast is the next best choice (as opposed to active dry). If you prefer fresh yeast or active dry, the conversion is rather easy to do, so it won't be a problem to adapt these formulas to your own yeast preference.

The level of detail and illustrations and photos that accompany many (or most) of the formulas are superb, and I have yet to come across a book that does a better job using visual aids (photos, diagrams, etc.). Specifically, the chapter on 'Advanced and Specialty Cakes' includes a cross-sectional diagram that shows exactly how the cake should be assembled, layer by layer, ingredient by ingredient.

Although my primary interest is bread and this book devotes only a small portion of its near 600 pages to bread, I still say that this book is an indispensable addition to any serious baker's library, and would serve as a wonderful "jumping off point" for novice bakers wishing to take their baking to the next level, or for intermediate or advanced bakers wishing to hone their skill or expand their repertoire.

Although a bit more expensive than many other books in the same category, the extra price is evident in the quality and content of this exceptionally well put-together publication. Highly recommended for novice and advanced bakers alike.

good basic book

I think a previous reviewer who gave the book only one star was being unfair. Yes, the book does have a lot of similarites to Professional Baking, but they are not the same book. I would say that most people probably only need one of them, but that does not make this book a bad book. From my reading of it, Professional Baking was designed to be used in baking & pastry programs at colleges (as it was used in the pastry program I attended), while The Professional Bakeshop is one you would pick up on your own when you needed a basic grounding in pastry and baking. The basics are covered well in this book, with explanations on how many aspects of baking work.

So disappointed!!!

I thought this book was going to concentrate on bread baking (like the cover suggest) but this is basically "Professional Baking" (Gisslen's other baking book) in a new wrapper and condensed. So now I basically have two of the same book. Even the pictures and the recipes are the same between the two books! If you already have "Professional Baking" don't waste your money on this "new" book because you won't really be getting any new information or recipes.
