The reason most people don’t effectively communicate their accomplishments is usually pretty simple: they have no idea what they are. People might think they know, but they still miss a staggering number of opportunities to share their true capabilities.

Even when they do understand the importance of measurable accomplishments, job-seekers and workers have difficulty remembering, tracking, and articulating their accomplishments. When they find themselves unexpectedly in need of a new job, in a position to seek a raise or promotion, or preparing for a performance review, they often encounter difficulty in brainstorming the accomplishments they’ve accrued in current and past jobs because they haven’t recorded achievements as they occurred. As career guru Jason Alba puts it, “When you most need this information is the time you are least likely to recall it.” In addition, job-seekers face a psychological barrier – difficulty talking about what they’ve done in their jobs in a way that frames these activities as accomplishments.

This is an important, practical, and engaging book. There are 233 insightful questions. You'll put it down having a clear sense of all of your accomplishments - ones that really matter to employers and investors, and that you may have never framed as such before. The chapter on how to quantity your accomplishments is crucial. The book is an efficient tool for an effective understanding of how effective you've been - and will be in the future. I'm also recommending it to every young person I know who is about to enter the workforce.

This a wonderful book by an accomplished career expert, Katharine (Kathy) Hansen, Ph.D., creative director and associate publisher of Quintessential Careers, as well as an author and instructor. About the Author
The late Harold Orlans contributed to Minerva, The American Scholar, Change, Biography, and The Journal of the T.E. Lawrence Society, and was the editor of Lawrence of Arabia, Strange Man of Letters, of which a reviewer said that he has "shown us…, better than in all the biographies, the pulsing heart of Lawrence." He lived in Bethesda, Maryland.

About the Author
Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture Series.

Barbara Lamprecht writes on and teaches architectural history, concentrating on Modernism, and practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record and Fine Homebuilding.

A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman documented modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98.

Original, deluxe version or smaller reprint?

The original, deluxe version of this work Richard Neutra: Complete Works (Architecture & Design Architecture & Design S.)(ISBN 3822866229), published in June 2000, was 360 pages and a whopping 18.5" x 13", bound with a real wood cover. It is out-of-print, and the cheapest copy on Amazon today is $445 (used $230).

The much reduced-in-size reprint (ISBN 3836512440) was published in October 2010 to celebrate Taschen's 25th anniversary. It has 100 pages more than the original but is only 13.3" x 10.3". Amazon price today is $44.09 new. The cover title is in a sans-serif, Neutra-esque font. I believe the only difference in content is the size of the photos, but I'd appreciate some confirmation on that.

Unfortunately, reader reviews for one edition are also posted under the other, and the Amazon price table on the original's page includes reprints. So, beware! Reviews posted before October 2010 are obviously for the earlier work. And if you're purchasing an original edition, you'll probably want to ensure you're not paying several hundred for a reprint.

But either way, it's an excellent book highlighting an amazing career. Enjoy!

This luxe volume traces the entire career of the great Richard Neutra (1892 - 1970), whose work symbolizes Modernist splendor in all its glory. Highly acclaimed for his designs of California residences, Neutra is one of the most important architects of the century and well deserving of this stunning tribute.
Originally from Vienna, Neutra came to America early in his career, settling on the West Coast. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape of California being a particularly suitable setting for his cool, sleek modern style. This book is awesome for a fan of 20th century architectural design. Even if you just enjoy good design, you'd appreciate the history and the photographs of this great master's work. The fact that the book is so oversized is a conversation piece in itself reflecting the treasure it holds inside. The cover is made out of actual hardwood, the text is written in English, German and French and most all the photographs are black and white. A true treasure for any collector.

Lisa Rodensky is the Barbara Morris Caspersen Associate Professor in the Humanities (2011-14) at Wellesley College. She is the author of The Crime in Mind: Criminal Responsibility and the Victorian Novel (2003) and the editor of Decadent Poetry from Wilde to Naidu (2006). Her essays have appeared in Victorian Literature and Culture and Essays in Criticism. She is currently at work on an analysis of the critical vocabulary of the nineteenth-century novel review.

Aurélie Drouet spent many years bringing other people's ideas to fruition. She started writing her own in 2009, publishing books on decorating and antique collecting. Jérôme Blin is a photographer whose personal work combines the intimate with the documentary in works such as Passage, Paysage published with the group of photographers Bellavieza. He has shot for numerous magazines and newspapers in France, including La Croix, Le Monde Magazine, and Viva Magazine. He and Drouet have worked together on Bibliothèques and Design Nature.

Amazing book! Not only does it feature furniture designs/profiles ...

Amazing book! Not only does it feature furniture designs/profiles of the people who made them but very detailed and instructional plans. Each project has photographic illustrations as well as the technical details...it is so refreshing to have all of the information there unlike other books/websites! It is also excellently designed in terms of layout and aesthetics. I can't wait to get started!

Design Pieces Could be Made From Any Scrap Lumber. Written from European perspective.

This book fell far below my expectations. I expected a book with plans that utilized the entire pallet, or most of a whole pallet (as the book's cover suggests); rather than plans that produced finished pieces that show no evidence of their pallet origins. It was first published in France, and is clearly written from the French/European perspective. The designs may be popular in Europe or France, but they are not all necessarily in style in the United States. Some of the design plans call for Euro pallets, which are much more difficult to find in most regions of the U.S. than other standard pallet sizes. The dimensions in the plans are given primarily as metric measurements, with the standard measurements appearing in parentheses. For many of the designs, scrap boards will work equally well, if not better, and you would not need to bother with a pallet. For those plans, if you have a source of scrap lumber, it would probably be easier to use those pieces of scrap (which are probably from higher quality lumber than that used to make most pallets) rather than finding a pallet, dismantling it, removing nails, and cutting the pieces to size. On a positive note, the plans seem to be detailed and provide helpful illustrations.

Here’s a summary of the contents:
• The first 17 pages are introductory and include pallet types, required basic tools, tips and pointers, history, dismantling instruction, and pallet terms.
• After each plan, there is a biographical page for the designer.
• The designs and plans are:
1) Child’s Bed
2) Floor Lamp
3) Armchair
4) Sun Lounger
5) Coffee Table
6) “Bead Head” (headboard for bed)
7) Coat Stand (you would not even need a pallet for this plan, any scrap wood could easily suffice)
8) Garden Table (requires Euro pallet)
9) Desk
10) Corner Shelf (again, you would not even need a pallet for this plan, any scrap wood could easily suffice)
11) Pouffe (foot stool)
12) Kitchen Shelves
13) Wall Lights
14) Shelf Unit
15) Picnic Tray (uses pallet board offcuts…again, you would not even need a pallet for this plan, any scrap wood could easily suffice)
16) Floor Lamp
17) Garden Seat
18) Modulopal™ (Cabin built from Euro pallets)
19) Bedside Table Light
20) Bookcase (requires Euro pallets)
21) Standard Lamp
22) Dining Table

The book contains a few good inspirational ideas, so I’m glad I purchased it, but I plan to return it for a refund. In other words, I would not purchase this book again, although I might check it out from a library. I liked the cover and page material. It is paperback, but seems quite durable.
