The collected essays address issues vital to feminist inquiry such as race, sexuality, the body, queer politics, and the advent of capitalism, but also appropriate ground that has been hitherto regarded as terrain hostile to feminism, such as textual editing and theatre history.

About the Author
Dympna Callaghan is William P. Tolley, Professor in the Humanities at Syracuse University, New York. Her most recent book is Shakespeare Without Women (1999), and she has written widely on feminism and Renaissance Literature.

Definitely feminist perspectives against Shakespeare

This book is helpful to understanding the view of feminists who support idea of Shakespeare as a misogynist, but you get no other feminist viewpoint of him. Everything in this book supports the idea of Shakespeare's misogyny-- a position with which I disagree, because I believe that Shakespeare is a champion of women. I wrote a 40 page, graduate school level paper that clearly illustrated how he is NOT a misogynist, and got a 100% on it-- but I digress.

This book is a must have for any serious Shakespeare scholar who wants to be familiar with feminist sentiments against the bard. Just be aware that there also exists feminists who do NOT believe that Shakespeare was a misogynist, and none of their essays appear in this book. The title is misleading in making it sound as though all feminists have the same viewpoint, as is the undiversified content of it. No opinion against Shakespeare's alleged misogyny is included in the book. I give it three stars because it lacks fully one half of the feminist perspective. You can be feminist and not see him as a misogynyist, and there are other books out there that you will need to buy to get the complete picture.

About the Author
Honored with the 2013 and 2012 KRob Architectural Delineation awards for Best Travel Sketch and the 2013 Gabriel Prize fellowship for 3 months in France, Stephanie Bower is a Seattle-based architectural illustrator, teacher, watercolorist, and traveling Urban Sketcher.Stephanie worked as a licensed Architect in New York City before gravitating to professional architectural illustration and concept design. In Seattle, she produces pencil and watercolor images for many renowned architecture and design firms.For over twenty-five years, Stephanie has taught the how-to's of architectural sketching--for a decade in New York City at Parsons, in Seattle at the University of Washington and Cornish College of the Arts, and most recently, in popular sketching workshops called "Good Bones" where she teaches the concepts of basic perspective sketching and watercolor. She was an instructor at the 2014 Urban Sketchers Symposium in Paraty, Brazil and also teaches an annual workshop in Civita di Bagnoregio ITALY. And it's SO easy once you understand

After reading dozens of books, taking classes, making all sorts of efforts to understand perspective drawing (and failing!), Stephanie's simple, clear instruction and tips has given me many "aha" moments. Really, why isn't perspective always explained so clearly? Everyone always talks about the vanishing point, but never really explained how to find it. Stephanie does. And it's SO easy once you understand. Everyone talks about foreshortening and converging. Stephanie clearly shows how it works and when to use it.

The book is filled with a wealth of sketches from urban sketchers all over the world - my only small complaint is that some of the drawings are almost too small to see very well. But, the sketches show many different styles and her accompanying analysis of the sketches is SO helpful.....she identifies the horizon or eye-level line and vanishing point in them and draws your attention to all the reasons the perspective works.

The book is small, yet mighty. It's full of pretty pictures, yet educational. It's written simply, yet clearly. It'll be in my sketching bag for quick reference from now on (I've already marked certain passages & folded down pages to return to)!
If you've ever struggled with perspective drawing, this is the handbook for you. If you've ever thought "I wish I could draw a building or landscape and have it look more realistic", this is the book for you. Because I'm here to tell you, Stephanie makes it easy to understand.

Simple and to the point

I took Stephanie's Craftsy class and really enjoyed it. There is some overlap but the book also covers a few extra things like reflections, arches and slopes. It's the first time perspective has ever clicked for me. Simple and to the point. I like that I can refer to things quick and that the topics/examples are succinct.

Great Content; Terrible Font Makes Reading It Difficult

I have given a lot of thought to how to review this book. The content is excellent and the author deserves five stars, The publisher, however, made a terrible decision regarding the font, the font size, and using weak pale ink on white paper. I have to use a magnifying glass to read it which is ridiculous. The author puts together a very helpful book, then the publisher makes a stupid decision about the font and the ink so it is difficult to read. I have noticed this same thing in some other new books. I hope it is not the trend. I know the business schools now teach making money takes precedence over serving the customer. In this case, the publisher has done a disservice to both the author and to those who are buying her book.

A brilliant book for advanced pattern making

It has been a long time since I have found a pattern making book that I have found as exciting as this book.

Once you get beyond the basics of creating patterns that fit, commonly called slopers, what do you do with them? Most designs I see on the street, in catalogs, and in the stores are so easy to execute that the design process is not challenging at all.

But there are a few designs that have me scratching my head thinking "How did they do that?" I have taken to calling them "Pattern Puzzles." This book is full of these designs. Each one is uniquely different but beautifully illustrated and explained in anywhere from one to three page spreads. Tomoko never takes more than three pages of illustrations to show how to make even the most complex and unusual design from a fitted sloper.

I am pleased to see her using the front bodice sloper for women that I now use in my online patternmaking classes. It has one dart for the bust to the waist and one to the armscye (arm hole). In my experience this configuration for the darts provides the optimum way of achieving an accurate custom fit. I also believe it is the best sloper for visualizing how to create the lines of original designs so you can convert from a two dimensional form to a three dimensional one.

She uses a technique for evaluating pattern shapes that I have found invaluable in my teaching which is to prototype design ideas in paper so you can assemble the shape before you even touch needle and thread.

Tomoko also shares another passion of mine for developing design ideas using dress forms in scale. All the photos in this book are of the designs on a half scale manikin.

Caveat #1: These designs are unusual. If you are looking for the conventional, this is not for you. But if you step beyond "I wouldn't want to wear that" and move on to "What can I learn from this pattern design technique," I believe you will increase your pattern design skills exponentially.

Caveat #2: There are no sewing instructions. I would recommend when you try these ideas out you do what Tomoko does and try them in scale first. If you don't have a scale dress form, fashion dolls such as the ones Tomoko works with are an excellent medium to experiment with.

Bravo Tomoko--I can hardly wait until your volume 2 is translated into English. Although your illustrations are so clear, I am almost tempted to get the Japanese edition.

Not for beginners!

I am not sure why I bought this book since I do not sew anymore (arthritis) and I do not particularly like to look at or to wear modern Japanese clothing. The cover caught my eye, I guess. I have always been curious about the structure of some of the more complicated Japanese designs. This is an amazing book. The clothing is amazing, if largely unwearable, but could be the springboard for your own interesting designs. Many of the ideas could be adapted to Western clothing.

Even though I have 60 years sewing experience and a tech degree in pattern design, I don't think that I could readily draft or adapt any of the patterns, not to mention making most of them. While there is ample information about drafting the pattern, there is no instruction about sewing the garment, appropriate understructure, interfacing etc. The notation on the patterns is a little different that what I was taught so I found it a little confusing. One generally needs to sew a complicated garment in a specific sequence that is not given in the book. If one is going to make the dress on page 55, for example, out of a "soft woolen georgette", one is going to need to underline and interline. That is not mentioned. I suppose a seasoned pro would know. Have plenty of muslin on hand if you try these garments.

The book is not for beginners. If you are very experienced with pattern drafting and sewing, go for it. If you are not, buy the book and admire the skill and ingenuity that has gone into drafting these patterns and making these garments. I would call this a sewing equivalent of a beautiful coffee table book, hardly practical but very interesting and, perhaps, inspirational. Four stars for the inspiration. While I know that pattern books rarely mention these things, I subtracted a star for the lack of information regarding structure and construction since these designs are so very complex.

Brilliant book. You must know how to sew and have some experience to truly take advantage of this book. If you are into patterning you will love it because it takes you in an incredibly creative and unusual direction. I thought I knew how to move darts and then I read this book!

Both have done graphic novels in the past; here, though, they use more of a hybrid style, alternating a more traditional picture-book layout with pages divided into panels and featuring speech bubbles. Fans of Varon’s work will love her trademark anthropomorphic characters, bright colors, and detailed but never cluttered pictures, which invite lingering over each page. Teen writer Castellucci’s name on the cover may convince some older readers to give this one a shot, but it is aimed squarely at elementary readers, who, hopefully, will soak up the message to embrace their own odd-duckness. Odd is awesome

Theodora is a perfectly normal duck, thank you very much. She swims with a teacup balanced on head to help maintain perfect posture and stays north when the rest of the ducks fly south for the winter (why would she want to leave her home??) and there's nothing strange about that. Chad, her newest neighbor, on the other hand is a bit odd. I mean he dyes his feathers weird colors and has all kinds of weird art projects around. But...they do like some of the same things. But can Theodora ever be friends with such an odd duck as Chad?

While this is an age old story, being yourself and making friends, Sara Varon and Cecil Castellucci bring their own unique twists to the story. By creating ducks as characters that are both clearly a bit different, Cecil lets the reader see that differences can seem perfectly normal to the other person. Even better though, is that Cecil shows that being the different...isn't all that bad. In some ways its a good thing, because it means you get to experience things differently than everyone else. And you might just have a friend to acompany you along the way.

Sara Varon's normal color palette of soft pastels works well for this book, making it feel like a book from 30+ years ago. Especially with the end papers of the book, they are just absolutely beautiful and I feel like I could spend hours just looking at them. I mean they don't have a lot of detail, repeating patterns of duck characters, but the memories associated with that type of design and color are fantastic. Sara also had lots of nice details hidden in the images, such as Theodora's carpet in the bedroom that looks like moving water with a dolphin and seahorse swimming around. All in all it's just a beautifully illustrated book.

In many ways this book reminds me of one of my favorite all time picture books The Big Orange Splot. Together these two create a vibrant and colorful story that readers young and old will greatly enjoy. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

Odd Duck---a refreshing joy

I rated Odd Duck with 5 stars because I feel that the story brings a much-needed message. These two ducks find their way through a negative viewpoint or two, instigated by a comment they overhear, and discover that their differentness will not end their friendship. They value one another and realize that there is room for more than one viewpoint. The illustrations are great, adding so much to the story. I would recommend this book to anyone, since the fresh, breezy illustratiions carry the story along and points are made in an easy, humorous way.

Brilliant.

This book exceeded my expectations in every way possible! The first thing I noticed upon pulling it out of the box was how good it felt! Beautifully illustrated and cleverly written, my 6 and 9 year olds both love this book and ask for it to be read over and over.

The story of the odd one out who doesn't realize she's so odd until she meets another odd one is cute and fun. There's something there for everyone to relate to and works especially well with the little ones. I'd buy it again, but I already have one.
