Brevity (Oxford Linguistics), by Laurence Goldstein

Brevity in conversation is a window to the workings of the mind. This book brings it into prominence as both a multifaceted topic of deep philosophical importance and a phenomenon that serves as a testing ground for theories in linguistics, psycholinguistics, and computer modeling. Brevity is achieved in a variety of ways. Speakers use elliptical constructions and exploit salient features of the conversational environment in a process of pragmatic enrichment so as to pack as much as possible into a few words. They take account of what has already been said in the current and previous conversations, and tailor their words to what they know about the beliefs and personalities of the people they're talking to. Most of the time they do all this with no obvious mental effort.

The book, which brings together distinguished linguists, philosophers, and cognitive scientists, is the product of an interactive multidisciplinary research project that extended over four years. The questions dealt with concern how speakers secure understanding of what they mean when what they mean far outstrips the literal or compositional meanings of the sentences or sentence fragments that they use.

Brevity sheds new light on economy in discourse. It will appeal to linguists, philosophers, and psychologists at advanced undergraduate level and above.

Soft & Sweet Baby Afghans
By Mary Knitting in AZ
I simply LOVE the patterns in this book. I've used the stitch patterns in larger afghans and in scarfs with great results. Though the stitch patterns aren't reversible, the back sides are pretty in their own way. What a great way to use more than one color using a simple technique.

A Godly Humanism: Clarifying the Hope That Lies Within, by Cardinal Francis George OMI, Cardinal George OMI

For Cardinal Francis George, the Catholic Church is not a movement, built around ideas, but a communion, built around relationships. In A Godly Humanism, he shares his understanding of the Church in lively, compelling prose, presenting a way to understand and appreciate the relationships of God to human beings and of human beings to one another. These loving relationships are continually made present to us in and through the Church, from the time of Jesus' first disciples down to our own day. We are introduced to how the spiritual and intellectual life of Christians, aided in every generation by the Holy Spirit working through the Apostles and their successors, resist the danger of splitting apart from one another. Though they take different outward forms at different times, both wisdom and holiness are made possible for every Christian of every station of life. Sign-posting his conversation by the milestones of his own spiritual and intellectual journey, Cardinal George invites us to view the Church and her history in ways that go beyond the categories of politicsthrough which we find merely human initiative, contrivance, and adjustmentand rather to see the initiative as God's first and foremost. God is the non-stop giver, we are non-stop recipients of his gifts, and the recent popes, no less than the Father of the Church, have made every effort to make us aware of the graces that is, of the unearned benefitsthat God confers on us as Catholics, as Christians, as believers, and simply as human persons. Pope Francis, he reminds us, contrasts human planning with God's providence, and this book is at once an exposition of that providence and a personal response of gratitude for the way it has operated in one man's life.
This persuasive book, imbued with the thoughts of profound thinkers from the Ancient world, from St. Augustine and other Church fathers, and steeped in the wisdom of church teaching from earliest times through to the Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, invites and persuades the reader to reimagine the church as communion and the life of faith that we live as part of it.

Profound book by an intelligent cardinal!
By Stuart Dunn
A Godly Humanism is the last book written by by Francis Cardinal George before his death. In this book, Cardinal George calls on us to understand and appreciate the human relationships with God and each other. He begins his book by talking about the intellectual tradition of the Catholic Church, how it has grown, evolved, and taken shape. He also explains that this intellectual tradition is not just important for the Church, but for society as a whole. This leads us to the whole "faith and reason" argument that we have all heard and read countless times. The Church, unlike other Christian churches does not put these two things against each other, but embraces both.

Chapter Two talks about Catholics who become intellectuals and intellectuals who become Catholics. The chief example in this chapter is, of course, St. Augustine. So many of us in our formative years are like St. Augustine. We go to college. We listen to many different thoughts and ideas. We absorb so much knowledge. But then, we have to parse through it and decide where ultimate Truth lies, and that is with God and His Church. Chapter Three delves into what makes Catholics different than Protestants, namely Tradition. Because of this Tradition, we can be assured of access to God due to things such as apostolic succession and the fact that our Church was founded after Jesus' Resurrection. The rest of the book focuses on topics such as living in a post-Christian society (very useful); education to integrate culture and religion; how to integrate Vatican II; and what recent popes have done for the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Reading through this book, it's easy to be reminded how brilliant of a mind that Cardinal George had. He pulled from numerous teachers both ancient (St. Augustine) and recent (Pope Francis) to demonstrate his point that the Catholic Church is built upon a relationship with God and each other. God is continually reaching out to us and showing us His presence and love. He reached out to us with the Holy Spirit when, the Holy Spirit worked through the Apostles, and he continues to reach out to us through their successors as well. Cardinal George reminds us of this and and the untold graces that God continues to shower on us, if we only let him, This was truly a beautiful book and is a fitting final book for the brilliance that was his life. Highly recommended!

Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Betrayed the Reagan Revolution to Win Elections (and How It Can Reclaim Its Conservative Roots), by Matt K.

From a leading voice among young conservatives, an impassioned argument that to stay relevant the Republican Party must look beyond short-term electoral gains and re-commit to historic conservative values.

In 1963 Richard Hofstadter published his landmark book Anti-Intellectualism in American Life. Today, Matt Lewis argues, America's inclination toward simplicity and stupidity is stronger than ever, and its greatest victim is the Republican Party. Lewis, a respected conservative columnist and frequent guest on MSNBC's Morning Joe, eviscerates the phenomenon of candidates with a "no experience required" mentality and tea party "patriots" who possess bluster but few core beliefs.

Lewis traces the conservative movement's roots, from Edmund Burke to William F. Buckley, and from Goldwater's loss to Reagan's landslide victory. He highlights visionary thinkers who understood nuance and deep ideology and changed the course of the nation. As we approach the 2016 presidential election, Lewis has an urgent message for fellow conservatives: embrace wisdom, humility, qualifications, and inclusion--or face extinction.

Review
"Lewis is a product of the conservative counterestablishment as reinvented by the Internet revolution... Lewis' knockabout style is a relief.... [He] argues that conservatives must recover the enthusiasm for ideas they had in the Reagan era."―New York Times Book Review (cover review)

"I've been reading Matt for a long time. He's always incisive and thoughtful and this book is both. Anyone who cares about the future of the Republican party should read it."―Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal columnist

"Matt K. Lewis takes the most unconventional possible approach to Washington journalism: he's completely honest all the time. Not everyone likes him for it, but that's their problem. Like Matt himself, this book is cheerful, smart and insightful as hell. Buy two copies."―Tucker Carlson, editor-in-chief of The Daily Caller, co-host of FOX & Friends Weekend

"Matt K. Lewis has fought in the trenches of some of our hottest political battles, occupying a unique position at the intersection of conservative politics and the popular culture. He brings a rare perspective to everything he writes about, and manages to look at what everyone else is looking at and see what no one sees."―Yuval Levin, editor of National Affairs

"Matt K. Lewis has written an insightful book about the roots of the conservative movement-and just how far Washington Republicans have diverged from that proud past. Too Dumb to Fail is a major achievement from one of conservatism's most important voices, and it could not come at a more critical time."―Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC's Morning Joe

"Matt K. Lewis is one of the sharpest and most principled political commentators of our day. Too Dumb to Fail is a lively and fascinating read for any person confounded by the state of today's Republican Party. Lewis provides some much-needed tough love as well as a clear way forward for the GOP. If Republicans are smart, they'll make this book mandatory reading."―Kirsten Powers, New York Times-bestselling author of The Silencing

"Very few books about politics get my 'must read' stamp, but Matt Lewis' is one of them. Every conservative feeling as though the movement has collapsed, every Republican despairing of ever winning the White House, every independent who has no idea what to do or whom to support, should read this book immediately."―Hugh Hewitt, host of The Hugh Hewitt Show

"Too Dumb to Fail traces the evolution of conservative philosophy from Aristotle to Burke to the present in a clear and readable way that reminds us why conservatives need big ideas--and why America needs conservatism."―Arthur C. Brooks, President, American Enterprise Institute

"Too Dumb to Fail... functions as a smart, sobering pre-mortem on 2016. Now, most books about 'fixing' conservatism are written by liberal concern-trolls who secretly want to kill it. But Lewis is an actual, real-deal conservative.... This, ultimately, is what Lewis really wants: A conservative movement that honors its intellectuals, that works through its ideological problems honestly, and that doesn't rush to glorify hucksters.... If you put Donald Trump or Sarah Palin back in 1980, they couldn't last a week in the ring with the Gipper. Because back then, conservatives expected more from their leaders. Matt Lewis thinks we should expect more today, too. He's probably right."―Jonathan V. Last, The Weekly Standard

"[Lewis] does not shy away from naming names.... This book is far from a standard D.C. 'if only they listened to me' critique.... Conservatives who feel dismayed at the current state of affairs should run out and buy Lewis' book."―Henry Olsen, The Weekly Standard

"A good book... Lewis writes with panache."―The Buffalo News

"Too Dumb to Fail provides the Republican Party a roadmap to get back to its intellectual foundations. With the rise of Donald Trump and Sarah Palin, the book perfectly represents the state of the Republican Party and where it's headed if it doesn't return to its core beliefs... Prescient."―Christian Schneider, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

"Lewis ... has probed the true makeup of today's GOP."―Washington Post

"Lewis' book offers a wise and far-reaching and brave take on how we got here and what conservatives must do to enlist the 'accumulated wisdom of the past to make our future even brighter.'... Too Dumb to Fail is worth reading and pondering, because we are watching many of the themes Lewis pinpoints play out in real time ... Too Dumb to Fail is a great summing up. It's also practical and specific. Earnest, witty and well-meaning, Lewis is more of a truth-teller than a diplomat or glad-hander. He names names.... This will not make [Lewis] popular. After the November 2016 elections, however, it may make Matt Lewis something of a prophet."―Washington Times

"Right from the beginning, Lewis shows the courage to take on conventional wisdoms in modern conservatism, and that alone makes his book essential."―Craig Shirley, Newsmax

"A great read... Really worth reading and thinking about."―Newt Gingrich (via Facebook)

“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” Edmund Burke
By Kristi Richardson
I firmly believe that you cannot be a political animal and not read what the opposition is writing. I must admit that some pundits I can only read so much and then I have to put it away, because it is not based on facts or ideas but on vitriol and stirring things up by repeating falsehoods. This book by Matt K. Lewis is not like these others. I read it all the way through and enjoyed it for the most part.

Mr. Lewis takes us through the beginning of the Conservative movement and I found his history engrossing. I used to laugh at William F. Buckley’s way of speaking but I never doubted his education and spirit. Nowadays the GOP and the Conservatives have dumbed their selves down so much, that if you don’t act as if you never read a book or newspaper, you won’t be elected. He shows examples of that with Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. If you think about it, how do you go to Yale and not get some knowledge? How do you become a doctor and not have some brains? Yet the people running for office act as if they are just regular folks and don’t get any knowledge outside of the Bible. In the end that will hurt their message.

Mr. Lewis points out specific steps that Conservatives need to take to modernize not moderate. I think our nation is stronger when both sides are strong and viable. The way it’s going now, the Democratic Party may have lopsided power in the future if the GOP doesn’t learn from this book.

I am a lifelong Democrat and while I used to say a “bleeding heart liberal”, as I age I will say I am more moderate and definitely not a democratic socialist. I think Mr. Lewis’ book is well written and should be required reading for anyone interested in politics.

Too Dumb to Fail is a winner.
By Steve
Too Dumb To Fail is a page turner for sure. Given the title of the book, you might suspect the book was written by a vitriolic blonde bomb-thrower from Fox News. Fortunately for those of us who want to win and grow the movement, this is not the case. The subtitle of the book illustrates its true purpose: How the GOP Betrayed the Reagan Revolution to Win Elections (and How It Can Reclaim Its Conservative Roots).

Too Dumb to Fail moves at a nice pace because Matt Lewis is an interesting writer. He writes clearly and does not overcomplicate topics that are easy to muddy-up. The difference between Matt Lewis and so many other writers is that he cares about the conservative movement. He is not looking back at 40 to 60 years of activism and then condemning everything about the future. Matt Lewis is as much a part of the future of our movement as he is a part of its past. Some of us campaign-types heard Matt teach sessions at party conventions. Matt's ability to teach us to talk, is perhaps what makes him such a good writer. He is not a lecturer; he is a teacher.

That eventually leads us to a really interesting chapter that discusses the hucksters who fleece our movement of dollars, yet produce nothing. Lewis humorously identifies these people as the Con$ervative Movement. For instance, Lewis writes about a group of PACs that spent roughly $54 million, but not quite $4 million of that was actually spent on getting Republicans elected. $50 million in conservative dollars wasted, possibly extorted, just in the 2014 election cycle alone. That story will get your blood boiling.

Lewis similarly discusses the 2013 Virginia race for Governor where Ken Cuccinelli nobly took on Terry McAuliffe. One group took in over $2 million saying they were going to help get Cuccinelli elected, yet they spent "less than one-half of one percent" on Cuccinelli's losing campaign. Lewis also briefly touches upon "Joe the Plumber" (a phenomenon I never understood) and his brief stay in the limelight of the Con$ervative Movement.

There are so many great examples in this book that really highlight the problems we are up against, even within our own movement. Lewis points to absurd statistics thrown out by Donald Trump, which is one thing. Then we realize he got the phony statistics from one of Ann Coulter's books, and the statistics have been thoroughly discredited. Then there is Donald Trump's lack of understanding that the money that funds Planned Parenthood "is fungible." Followed later by Ann Coulter declaring, this time via Twitter, in response to Donald Trump's immigration plan, “I don’t care if [Donald Trump] wants to perform abortions in White House after this immigration policy paper.”

Lewis puts great emphasis throughout this book on intellectual thought in the Republican party, more of it in the distant past than in its present. Ours is a movement founded upon solid philosophical and intellectual arguments and principles. Lewis is not writing this to tell us that we are dumb now. He is telling us why this intellectual foundation matters. "When you lose intellectuals, you lose popular culture and, before you know it, you've lost the culture war," writes Lewis.

Why did Obama’s "you didn't build that" remark not really matter to the outcome of the 2012 election? Lewis has an interesting take on this in the wider view of our culture wars.

Lewis challenges us not to simply walk away from pop culture, but rather to influence it and affect it. "Christian conservatives must work to authentically engage the culture, instead of trying to ape what's already popular." As Lewis notes later, "By first rejecting the culture and turning inward, and then focusing almost solely on politics, conservatives now find themselves increasingly shut out of major conversations that average Americans are interested in." Lewis arrives at a sensible and pragmatic solution, "The answer is for conservatives to make good art, not necessarily to make conservative art."

Do you think pop culture and the conservative movement do not go together? Lewis correctly points out that, "Winning elections means having a tent big enough to attract a majority." He follows that up later with an entire chapter titled, "Modernize, Don't Moderate." He was right to do this because too often the "big tent" concept gets labeled as something it is not, and those in pursuit of a bigger tent are labeled as well.

We have some demographic realities to face. Whether it is race, education, age, location, or marital status, our movement is losing ground in many of the numbers that matter. Lewis writes, "the conservative moment appears to want to keep the GOP a party almost exclusively for older, whiter, more rural Americans." He continues, "For Reagan-Kemp conservatives, this is a philosophical and mathematical problem." Rather than "doubling down on cohorts that are losing population," Lewis is instead suggesting ways that we can grow the movement without dumbing down our principles.

On election day 2012, when Mitt Romney would fall short of unseating an incumbent President, exit poll respondents were asked about four qualities of each candidate, Romney and Obama. Mitt Romney won on three of the four qualities, but it was the one quality that Obama won that made all the difference. On the question about which candidate "cares about people like me," Obama won in a landslide. Lewis tells us what that number was, and why it matters.

Lewis has a message for talk radio hosts, read the book to see it, it is important.

So, what should conservatives do today? Lewis writes, "The real answer, I suggest, is to look to the Reagan model-but not in a way that looks backward or assumes nominating a hard-core conservative is a panacea. Reagan looked to the future, and so should we." This will not be easy, change is tough. But change can also be our missing ingredient. The reality about the Right, is as Lewis notes, "it has to be better, stronger, tougher, smarter." Too Dumb to Fail can help with all of that.

Finally, readers will get twenty book suggestions at the end. I am going to do what every author wants done and suggest you get a copy of the book and read the list (and the entire book) for yourself. Lewis' book suggestions are not typical. If you go in expecting to see books by Sean Hannity, Dick Morris or Michael Savage, or any of Ann Coulter's books, you will be disappointed. This list is deeper than all of that.

There is so much more in this book. For instance, what is pastor Tim Keller doing that is worth replicating within the conservative movement? What are "Ideological Immigrants"? Why are we implored to "Teach Your Children Well"? What about think tanks that are now becoming activists as well? What is "The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind"? And what is the reality about how to "Appeal to Hispanics"?

This all amounts to a very interesting book at a very good time.

I have intentionally been vague on many of the topics discussed in Too Dumb to Fail because I want to really encourage you to read this book. It is a quick read, it is succinct and well written, it is a critique and not a condemnation, and perhaps as important, it is aspirational. Too Dumb to Fail is a book I will go back to over the next few years and make sure I have properly implemented many of the suggestions that Lewis makes.

As a final tease for Too Dumb to Fail, any book that can recall a scene from the baseball movie Bull Durham, which involves a great scene between Crash Davis and Nuke LaLoosh, and can relate that to political messaging, that's a job well done. Enjoy.

A Unique Perspective into the Conservative Movement! A Must Read! A+++
By Carbonlord
Matt Lewis is a super conservative writer, he is independent minded and an excellent columnist. I’ve seen him a number of times on CNN, ABC’s Nightline and HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy of this book, which was an eye opener all the way to the end. I was looking forward to this book, after watching him speak so many times before.

Imagine that in the infancy of the book, Matt started with a purpose of showing us the sort of populist anti-intellectualism that has been bubbling over and throughout our current political campaigns of the Republican party? Could he have ever guessed that Trump would be there, now? Perhaps he knew?

In his quote, “empty-headed talking point reciters, rookie politicians who’ve never managed anything in their lives, media clowns such as Donald Trump, dim bulbs in tight pants or short skirts, professionally outraged shout-fest talking heads and total political neophytes,” He stipulates how he feels where the conservative movement has been led to.

He was also quoted, stating;

"Although I think that conservative media outlets help — they've helped expose liberal hypocrisy, forced stories into the mainstream — there's also a downside."

“they don't even have to say anything conservative; all they have to do is criticize Obama and we go gaga and we eat it up.”

Lewis talks about the age of politicians trying to create more hypocrisy and outrage, than in the actual principles of governing. Creating a vicious circle of this, in order to obtain more funding, to create more outrage and so it goes on and on and on…..

Matt Lewis concludes his book, by believing that conservatives really need to bring more enthusiasm about their originality of ideas, as they had shown in the Reagan era. I thought the book was insightful, how he traced an insightful book the roots of the conservative movement and showed, in his options, just how far they have strayed form their original ideals. Hope it Helps:)

Good!

You can't get bored of the meat cooked on fire: Shiny sauce, some garnish, the mixture of smoke's odor and spices give you a special smell that you can't forget. The process of cooking is very complicated, where all of your movements need to be sharpened over all the years that you cook, same amount of time goes for finding the perfect ingredients.
In Daniel Roy's book you won't find any debates like which kind of meat is better, why that marinade is the proper one, instead you'll find lots of recipes on how to cook meat and not only. All of that followed by interesting stories and rips of an experienced traveler and cook.

By Eleanor Angel
I love cooking, and one of the best way to cook food is through grilling. However, most of us are guilty about just putting that piece of meat on top of a hot charcoal, and that's it. After reading this book, it further explained to me why it is important to also choose the best charcoal, to get the best taste of meat. The recipes are also mouth watering, I also felt hungry after reading the book. What I liked the most about this book is the life hack that was given after the recipe, I got a lot of tips and guides and I will surely apply it to my next barbecue party.

UML Explained, by Kendall Scott

UML Explained is an approachable, non-technical introduction to the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the standard graphical notation for modeling the elements, structure, and behaviors of object-oriented software systems. Assuming no prior knowledge of the UML, object-oriented design, or programming fundamentals, this book fully explains basic concepts and terminology such as objects, classes, and use cases. It shows how the UML integrates with an iterative and incremental process. Numerous sample UML diagrams and a running example throughout the book help you understand how to apply the UML to real-world software development. Also included is a comprehensive glossary of important terms. You will learn about such essentials as: The importance of visual modeling How the UML identifies objects and classes Capturing requirements and defining use cases with the UML How to extend the UML and enhance visual models Modeling the details of object behavior with activity diagrams and statechart diagrams Component and deployment diagrams Whether you are a non-technical professional who needs to understand software development activities within the workplace or a system designer who has never

From the Inside Flap

When I started seriously considering writing a proposal for a book about the Unified Modeling Language (UML), Amazon listed about 62 books whose titles contained "UML." By my reckoning, 61 of those books were aimed at programmers and other highly technically oriented people. The other one introduced its example system more than halfway through the book and, a few pages into that chapter, started showing figures with way too many things in them for a beginner to be able to handle. It became clear to me that what was missing was a book that approaches the UML from the standpoint of what relatively nontechnical people need to understand in doing their jobs--like how to capture requirements--rather than starting with the diagrams, as most of these other UML books do.

I wrote this book literally for "the rest of us," people who see the UML from the outside looking in. UML Distilled (Fowler and Scott, Addison-Wesley, 1997), for instance, made certain assumptions about its readers, namely, that they were comfortable with object-oriented terminology and concepts and that, for the most part, they were already using one or another of the approaches designed by the "three amigos," the creators of the UML--Grady Booch, Jim Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson. For every set of modelers and analysts and developers who sank their teeth into Martin Fowler's brilliantly conceived book, though, there were at least a few people who wanted to know about this cool language but didn't quite know where to start. If you're in that latter group, this book may be for you.

I'm not assuming any knowledge of object orientation (OO). (Note that although the UML certainly is applicable in non-OO contexts, such as data modeling, the language was explicitly designed for use with OO.) If you find yourself reading a definition you're already familiar with, you should be able to skip that paragraph (or subsection or section) without any problem. I've also focused on capturing what I think are the most important aspects of the UML for people who probably aren't at the center of development efforts but still need to know what's what.

I made my living as a technical writer for 16 years, translating complicated subject matter into reader-friendly documents and manuals. Now I make my living as a trainer and mentor, teaching people about the UML and about the approach to software development that Use Case Driven Modeling with UML (Rosenberg and Scott, Addison-Wesley, 1999) advocates. I'd like to think that this book reflects my years of experience. Organization of This Book

Chapter 1, Why the UML?, describes why it's important to learn about the UML. This includes an explanation of the crucial nature of visual modeling. The chapter also offers some history about how the UML evolved and an overview of the key underlying principles of the language.

Chapter 2, The UML and Process, explains that even though the UML is technically process independent, it's been explicitly designed to work within the context of an iterative and incremental process. This discussion includes an overview of the Unified Process and a look at how the phrases "use case driven," "architecture-centric," and "iterative and incremental" will appear, in one form or another, throughout the rest of the book.

Chapter 3, Identifying Relevant Real-World Things, describes how a project team uses the UML in identifying, and beginning to refine, the things and concepts in the real world of relevance to the problem that the team is trying to solve with the new system. This chapter introduces The Internet Bookstore, a proposed online bookstore that will serve as a running example throughout the rest of the book.

Chapter 4, Capturing Requirements, describes how people can use what are known as "use cases," which are scenarios that include user actions and system responses, to explore, negotiate, and refine functional requirements. The chapter also addresses the role that prototyping plays in the development and refinement of use cases.

Chapter 5, Expressing How Things Work Together, describes how a project team explores how objects work together to address the behavior specified by use cases, as well as other required system behavior. This includes a discussion of robustness analysis, which uses extensions to the UML that are specific to the Unified Process.

Chapter 6, Refining the Structure of Things, describes the tasks involved in refining and expanding the domain model, which contains the real-world things and concepts first discussed in Chapter 3, and how this effort happens in response to the work involved in modeling interactions (discussed in Chapter 5).

Chapter 7, Describing Flows, describes how you can use the UML to describe business and process workflows. The chapter also discusses how you capture the behavior of a system that can have multiple activities occurring at once.

Chapter 8, Tracking the Lives of Things, describes how the UML represents the lifetimes of objects as they carry out the work of the system. This discussion includes a look at how certain kinds of objects can exist in more than one state at the same time.

Chapter 9, Showing How Groups of Things Work Together, describes how a team can use various UML constructs and diagrams to illustrate how groups of things will work together in the system, on a conceptual level. This includes the UML definitions of terms such as "pattern" and "framework" that are increasingly important in the realm of software development.

Chapter 10, Describing How Things Will Be Built, describes the ways that one shows how the system being designed will actually be built, in terms of packages of software called "components," and how those components will be geographically distributed in the new system.

The book also includes a glossary, which contains definitions for all the terms introduced in the body of the text, and a complete index. Background

This book has been in the works for a long time.

The story starts in the spring of 1996. I was living in Dallas, getting a little bored making my living as a technical writer, cranking out software documentation for programmers I'd never meet. I decided to approach Rational about getting some kind of job that would get me closer to actual customers.

That conversation didn't lead to anything in the way of a job, but it did lead to me getting a copy of the 0.8 version of the documentation set for what was then called the Unified Method, written by Grady Booch (who I'd heard of) and James Rumbaugh (who I hadn't). After a quick glance at the densely packaged paragraphs and the scary diagrams (one had 15 boxes and 19 lines), I put it aside.

My relentlessly curious nature caused me to pick up the book again soon after that. Then I spent several hours trying to make sense out of it. I finally realized that I was looking at something fairly significant, and that the only way I'd be able to really understand it would be to rewrite it. I was just beginning to follow the comp.object newsgroup on the Internet, so I decided, on a lark, to post a query that read something like this: "What would you think if a professional writer rewrote this material?"

Grady Booch wrote back and said "Go for it!"

This was more than a little disorienting. On the one hand, I was encouraged to get a positive response; on the other hand, I thought, "Great. The first thing I did is annoy Grady Booch." When I asked him what he meant, though, he told me that he and Jim and Ivar Jacobson (whose name would appear on the cover of the next version of the Unified Method documentation) were all likely to write 600-page books, and there was a good chance they wouldn"t be ready for a long time. Then he said that if I were to write a concise guide to the Unified Method--say, 150 pages--people would buy it.

So, I put together a proposal and sent it to Addison-Wesley, on my birthday (never mind which one). I was pretty dubious about it, given that I knew almost nothing about object orientation, but I figured I had nothing to lose.

Over the next six months, the proposal didn't get accepted, but it wasn't exactly rejected either. I decided to move to San Francisco at the end of 1996, and soon after that, interesting things started happening.

I met the editor to whom I'd submitted the proposal, Carter Shanklin, at Rational's user conference early in 1997. He said that my proposed book wasn't going to be viable, but also that he was ready to do a deal for the first book about what was now called the Unified Modeling Language (UML), and that he'd be interested in having me involved in some way.

Around that time, I met Jim and Ivar. (Grady was at Oracle, so unfortunately I didn't get a chance to meet him then and thank him for helping me get to that point. Oddly enough, I was working for Oracle at the time.) There were various ideas bouncing around about how this book was going to get done, but in the end, Booch, Jacobson, and Rumbaugh weren't directly involved in the production of the book. Instead, Carter brought Martin Fowler, whose recently published Analysis Patterns was already getting great reviews, and myself together to see if the chemistry was right for cranking a book out in, oh, four months.

I had no idea whether we could come anywhere near meeting that deadline, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Martin already had about half the book written when we got started, which helped considerably. The first thing I did was take a chunk of about 75 pages of text and diagrams and turn it into a reviewable piece of material, making decisions about subsections and mixing up paragraph lengths and many other things--over a period of three days, which included one full day of work for Oracle--and we were off to the races. I guess UML Distilled came out pretty well, all things considered.

After the book came out, I wanted to publish something in my own voice, so I put together the first version of my UML Dictionary. This was based on the official documentation that Rational submitted to the Object Management Group (OMG) in the spring of 1997, when it was first seeking approval of the UML as a standard. The text was still fairly stiff, but at least I was getting a good handle on the material.

The Dictionary led to another book deal (Use Case Driven Object Modeling, with Doug Rosenberg), and now, here I am with my first solo book. Acknowledgments

I'd like to thank the Academy...

Let's start again.

I'd like to thank the several thousand people who've played crucial roles in my development as an author. In alphabetical order...

Maybe not.

I'd like to extend special thanks to the following Lucky 13: Guy and Nancy Scott, who had the good sense to put me on the right path and then (mostly) stay out of the way; Jonathan Leach, intellectual foil supreme; Lisa Silipigni, who helps me remember every day to fight the good fight; Grady Booch, without whom I wouldn't have been able to write this book; Martin Fowler, for letting me produce the world's best UML book; Carter Shanklin, Paul Becker, and Ross Venables, past and present representatives of a class organization, Addison-Wesley; Doug Rosenberg, who supplied the inspiration for the running example, taught me how to do robustness analysis, and provides me a healthy living as a UML trainer and mentor; Laura Danoff, for at least trying to read my other books; Robert Pirsig, who posed the questions that keep me going; and Hunter Faires, the greatest teacher ever.

Clear explanations of key concepts
By Christo
I bought this book on the spur of the moment. I was impressed with Kendall Scott's clear writing style and the good examples. I also liked the introduction. It explains UML in the context of the unified process, with reference to architectural views.
This book is probably not all you want to know about UML. But it is a good, light-weight reference to the portions of UML you'll use most. It explains the what, when, and how.
Mr Scott will like me as well - I own 3 other books he has co-authored. The Fowler book (UML Distilled) covers the same ground, but it is more dense, with fewer examples. What is nice is that the examples in this book builds upon the examples of the second Rosenberg book. See my reviews on the Rosenberg books elsewhere. (Use case driven object modeling with UML).

The only UML book that's readable
By A Customer
I have the UML User Guide, UML Distilled and this book. I got this book the last, and I only wished I had it as my first UML book! The other UML books are very technical, dry and boring. They package two much information in two few words. Sometimes I feel like I have to read each sentence several times to figure out what they are trying to say. Don't get me wrong, I am no novice OO (object-oriented) programmer: I have more than five years of industrial experience with OO programming (that's not including my experience with these languages in college and graduate school) and I have two industry-recognized certifications. Also I have use Rational Rose (if you are looking at this review, you should know that it is for). However, I never finished reading the other two books as I always either got bored or frustrated after reading a few pages. I knew most of the concepts in UML, yet I still felt that some concepts were still somewhat fuzzy to me and that's why I bought this book.
Reading this book, on the other hand, is a breeze. It is like reading Harry Potter (OK, maybe I am exaggerating a little bit). Once I picked it up, I just couldn't put it down. It is very concise (just 129 pages), but covers almost all the important areas of UML. It defines every term (there are so many of them in UML!) in a clear, easy-to-understand manner. Yet, it is not dry or boring: it uses a real-life example throughout the book to make all the terms easy to grasp. I finished reading the book in less than a week. Now I feel much more comfortable with UML, and I will certainly keep this book as a reference. This is simply the best UML out there, as I said, I only wished I read this book first so I wouldn't waste all those hours in frustration and boredom.

Very poor
By A Customer
A very poor book on UML. Many of the descriptions are either lacking in important information, poorly executed, or simply wrong.
One example: pp. 94-95. The activity diagram is supposed to describe flows for a given object, except that object is never given. The text states: "Figure 7-7 shows part of an activity diagram relevant to our bookstore." Gee, couldn't the author have stated which object? Perhaps put a title on the diagram indicating which object? Instead, it is left to the reader to decipher what the author means.
Similarly, the flow of the book is extremely poor. Classes and associations before before use cases? In that, only one page on objects?
Yeah, sure, the book is simple to read but why would one want to read something this simple when it will only set you off in the wrong direction?
I only gave this thing 1 star because I can't give it 0.
