The first printing of this amazing book was August 1931. The principles shared in it are as applicable today , as they were when Vash Young put them on paper. One of the great truths shared in is work is " Prosperity cannot be built on fear ". The book is a gem !

No other biography comes closer to the subject

As a devoted reader of history, especially of the early 20th century period, I probably have gone through every popular and even arcane book on Hitler and National Socialism. I've read Albert Speer's "Inside the Third Reich," Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reach," Alan Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives," . . . yet, these books, while informative, lack the depth of understanding of the horrible phenomenon of Hitler that Joachim Fest brings to his biography. Maybe because Fest himself is German and is therefore closer to his subject. Yes, the style is dry, and the book is indeed rather biased at times--the preface is titled incredibly "Hitler and Historical Greatness!" Yet, within that preface, you will find insights and observations that are lacking in all other biographies on the Fuehrer. I myself was riveted from page one all the way to the end. So, if you want to really understand Hitler, read this book. If you want to read a lighter biography, read the sections on Hitler in Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives."

As much a biography of Germany as of Hitler

I'm a big fan of biographies, and this remains (some 10 years after reading it) one of my favorites. There is no dearth of books on Hitler, of course. Fest's accomplishment here is that each section on Hitler is straddled by a section describing other events in the world and Germany, always giving the reader a larger context in which Hitler's activities can be placed.
I'm a little dismayed by [people] who suggest that Hitler was merely a sufferer of post-traumatic-stress syndrome after his experience in the trenches of WWI, and that Fest does a disservice (to Hitler?) by leaving this information out. But many people have suffered in the trenches in many wars without later moving on to attempt world domination and genocide.
In any case, Fest's biography omits nothing. It is written in a clear, beautiful language, and will leave you with an entirely new understanding of Hitler, Germans and Germany.

the ultimate biography

Joachim Fest's book "Hitler" is a rare pleasure to read. His words create an atmosphere and a world that we can understand. Fest manages to step into the shoes of Hitler -- we sit and day-dream with that man and build castles in the air. More than that, he manages to bare Hitler's mind and soul to the reader. We learn how and why Hitler acted as he did. His actions that are so vile that we absolutely condemn them, suddenly become clearer. We begin to understand and are warned of the power that one single man can usurp, even though he is penniles, without education and friends. Fest does in no way justify Hitler or his tyranny. On the contrary, he does open our eyes so that we see how actions of such brutality are possible. He makes us understand that they can happen again, but also how they can be avoided. It is an in-depth study of a strongman--strongmen by the way come in all sizes; we encounter them in our daily lives. Since Hitler's demise, half a dozen countries have suffered strongmen as heads of state, and it is vital that we understand and recognize a tyrant before it is too late. None better to learn from than Fest's Hitler, one of the shrewdest and most ruthless strongman of them all.

Really excellent book on the process of concepting

This is the single most practically useful concepting book that I've ever seen in 15 years as an advertising copywriter.

It offers a really clear set of questions/conceptual directions you can use to get the juices flowing or "unstick" yourself on a project-- along with real-world examples of how each approach has been used in previous ads. I love it and use it constantly when starting a new project or to help me be sure I've really explored the full range of conceptual possibilities for a project that I'm working on.

Great book, worth every penny and 10X that of most of the advertising books I have.

MORE THAN I EVER EXPECTED

Jacqueline Bloomfield(PhD, MN, BN, PGDip, RN, RM) is a lecturer at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London. Her work involves clinical skills teaching and she has extensive experience as an OSCE examiner.

Anne Pegram(MPhil, BSc (Hons), PGCE(A), RN) is a lecturer at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London. She is the OSCE coordinator within the school and is involved in the planning and implementation of OSCEs in pre- and post-qualification programmes. She is also a founding member of the OSCE UK network.

Carys Jones(PhD, MA, PGCE, BA) until recently was a lecturer in academic communication at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery. She is now a consultant working in a new project involving two additional Schools within King’s College London. Her area of expertise is in how verbal and written communication helps learning.

Anyone who loves Ansel Adams and his photography will find this is a special book. Printed for his 100th birthday, the quality of the reproduced photographs is truly amazing. It's really the only art book of his you need in your library because it shows off his work so brilliantly! I have looked at this book too many times to count and still get joy from it.

Ansel Adams was more than just a photographer, he was an artist in the highest sense of the word and the inspiration for generations of landscape photographers for the last 60 years -- and counting. This is more than just a recipe book. It is also like a manual on making smothies. After reading it you have useful information on how to make smoothies, the tools/equipment to use the fruits and veggies to choose. The author goes further and informs the reader on the nutritional benefits of the main ingredient used in each smoothie. She also explains why you should use smoothies instead of other forms of preparing meals and refreshments, and what you should put in them.
Also useful are the tips the author provides on a healthy lifestyle. Nothing new but a necessary reminder that food alone does dot a healthy person make. Ah, so many tasty things to make in this little book! The Avocado Dip was a real treat for me as I'd never really thought about using my Nutri Ninja for something like that. It's a big hit at my house! I also really like how you get all the extra info in the book, like the nutritional tips. Really makes it more than just your average recipe book. Can't wait for more awesome recipes.

Very accurate sheet music

I mainly got this music book for the piano part of Keane's hit "Somewhere Only We Know". To my surprise, the sheet music seems perfectly accurate! This book doesn't do what a lot of sheet music does in cutting out the top-hand piano part in exchange for matching the vocals. Everything is there, and I am glad for that. Thanks for the great and accurate sheet music!

What, an *entire* book on copepods? Yes, and at a necessary length as well. The most abundant metazoan on the planet has now been given its proper due. This is a vital resource for not only plankton researchers, but should also have a close and easy spot on any marine ecologist's bookshelf. This is a true treatise of calanoid copepod biology including: systematics, anatomy, physiology, ecology and behavior. I can think of no other single source that is so useful to instructors and plankton researchers.
